Yes, you could have handled it better. You could have simply done what you had agreed to do.

That said, I don't think he was any prince about his behavior either.

It didn't matter whether your excuse was valid or not - from his point of view you never intended to do what you told him you would. Odds are his anger was borne out of feeling manipulated, which is why he pulled the "wait til I'm done eating..." move.

You feel hurt, he apologizes, but you aren't able to move beyond it.

Find a new way to address these kind of issues - they become quicksand otherwise.
