When he realizes his mistakes,it will be a huge moment for him. Stay strong and don't say a word to hubby. This is a consequence to his actions. He threw around the words divorce,I am done and yet he still has not filed or talked to your son. My guess there is still a connection that he isn't ready to let it go. No self respecting father would let their son dangle unless he was unsure himself. You filing will show his true feelings.
