Sounds to me like they split up and they refinanced the home to get money to pay off the other property. The other property is now paid for and not part of the mortgage. Is that correct?

So, technically, you aren't paying for the other property. It is just now he owes more on the house. This must have all been done as part of their split up.

If all this was done prior to you getting into the picture, then I think he is correct.
