you can google depression and find tons of sites that give the whole list of symptoms but some of the basics are:
lack of energy
lack of interest in normal activities
always tired/sleeping or not able to sleep
significant weight gain or loss
feeling of sadness
The symptoms need to be present for at least two weeks to be considered depression and not just the blues. It can be trigged by a situation (a death, job loss, relationship troubles/ending, etc.) which can be helped with therapy to talk about it sometimes, or it can be caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain which can be treated with medication.
Exercise can be helpful, but depending on the severity and the cause, it may not be enough to treat it completely. But it's always good to exercise, it will help.
