Hi there. I'm in love and me and my fiance plan on moving to her native town in Canada. As my I'm interested in moving with her, are there any repercussions of such moves? Does it affect the relationship in the longrun? I would appreciate if any one you could share your experiences here with me.
The career prospects gonna be good and I know her family well. We dated for a bit and then she moved. But we've mantained the long distance over a year now and despite of the time difference, we still keep up with one another. Even putting eachother to bed on calls. Our whatsapp messaging counting has crossed half a million mark though we are on video calls atleast 3-4 hours a day.
I'm scared, only scared is she would ever hold that onto me though moving has good in it for me too.
Generally speaking you will want to be sure her home town has an international population. Other wise a small town of indigenous people that have lived there for generations will also be very small minded about foreigners and like look at you like an illegal immigrant or something.
Like on Modern Family when Jay Pritchet was getting Gloria her citizenship he called her a Mexican Jumping Bean. She said she was from Colombia, but he insisted that once she became a US Citizen that she would no longer understand the difference.
Canada isn't really a "foreign country" unless you're headed to these Québécois lands . But you would do well to learn their customs and other things. Also to have knowledge of local laws regarding employment, local job situation, practical matters.
Who suggested moving?
And why?
Can you work there?
Is the weather vastly different to what you are used to?
Is your destination a French speaking area? I assume you live in USA and speak only English. I had a Quebec friend tell me it would be awkward to live there without speaking some French.
Can she stay with you? Not saying females have to follow males, but both options should be looked at.
How small is the destination? Small towns are different to big cities. All big cities seem the same to me.
Take a long visit there before any permanent move. Experience the place and people before deciding.
I was in a similar position and now wish I had moved. It would have been hard to learn the languages, hard to fit in, and cost income. But I would now have a second language, would understand my W better and would have lots of interesting stories.
I'm in UK and French is so not my thing, but what I know, it is an english speaking town so that's no biggie. I'm more concerned about the WHAT IF. THE BIG WHAT IF! What if things don't go the way we expect.
