basically the thread title yep... how can I figure out if there is a key logger (or similar thing) installed on a computer I use? Trying to protect myself from stbxh. Hoping I'm just being paranoid, but want to make sure.

Good evening
Some checking shows that it can be very difficult to detect some keyloggers if they are set up by someone with full access to the computer and technical skill, or a good product.

Personally I think the best approach is to spread misinformation. I can't imagine thinking my wife was monitoring the computer, but if I somehow got that idea, and for some reason didn't just divorce her then:

I'd set up an account under a different name from work or a phone. Then I would pretend to hook up with this owner of this fictional account. There would be a planned meeting at a hotel over lunch. I'd wait for my wife to show up to "catch" me, then divorce her. Now also having proof that she had been engaged in cyber-crime.

But I'd never go that far. The marriage would have no value to me without trust .

Once you've ruled out the presence of a hardware keylogger, the preferred method would be...

1) Remove hard drive(s) from possibly-compromised PC
2) Attach hard drive(s) to clean, secure PC
3) Use AV and other anti-malware tools on clean PC to scan/remediate suspect drive(s)

In lieu of another PC, I'd probably buy a new, clean drive, install my OS and AV/anti-malware tools on it, and then use it to scan/remediate the other drive(s).

Outside of either of the above, you're sort of stuck relying on available AV/anti-malware tools.

That said, there are other methods that come to mind, but (a) they can get quite detailed and (b) I have no idea w/ respect to whether or not any of them would actually work.

Maybe search Google for "how to detect keyloggers" to get started.

Slash and burn.

  • Format and restore the HD. Restore all programs from CD or original download.
  • Set a secure password so only you can use the computer.
  • Do not use an account with admin rights for your casual work on the system.

That will catch most of what your husband might be up to (99.95%). If he is extremely sophisticated, like he is a penetration tester in computer security, he might hit you will something embedded into your backed up files that will give him root or install the key logger directly. If that is the case, you are outclassed anyway and you have more things to worry about than just what is on your system.

Get a personal VPN on a device only you use to conceal your network traffic from local eyes (your husband) and just stick with the device for anything confidential.

Perhaps we need a "How to avoid detection when cheating on your spouse" thread to accompany weightlifter's "standard evidence gathering" post....
