Unhappy Is background check necessary?

I met this guy about a year ago in an online dating site and now we are planning to get married. So far I don't have any issues with his attitude and how he treated me. Do you think it is necessary to have a background check on him as recommended by this <url removed> article that I've read? Will this give you an assurance that you will be safe with the person?

Well I am sure you will want to know if he is married or has a criminal past. If you do it read the results and throw them away and never tell him about it. You do have a right as you never know who you are dealing with over the internet.
