Re: To everyone on TAM - new policy
Moderating's a hard enough job already. So I can't imagine why on earth you'd want to add to the workload by ferreting out everyday salty words adults ought to be able to handle, unless they are used in an abusive manner. Anyone who wants to avoid certain words can install a browser extension that does the same thing without affecting what others read or say.
"Tone" is determined by many things other than "those" words, and a string of asterisks does nothing to mask it. If I call someone a stupid ****ing son of a *****, does the filter truly mitigate my rudeness? I've always thought the algorithm should be turned off entirely and statements judged on their import, and I considered the tacit tolerance of common workarounds a welcome relief. I think this new decision detracts from the site, but do as ye will.
