To everyone on TAM - new policy

To: All
From: The Mods (Ele, LifeIsTooShort, MattMatt, Farsidejunky and MEM2020)

The hardest part of being a moderator is trying to foster an environment where people:

Feel free to express their innermost thoughts......
......On a range of emotionally charged subjects.......
........While retaining a civilized tone with one another......

In the spirit of encouraging a 'civilized tone' we have been communicating our intent going forward to prevent folks from defeating the obscenity filter. If you have received a message on this topic - you are in good company as many posters do this from time to time.

In a perfect world of unlimited resources, each offender would get a diplomatic, highly personalized message. In the real world of volunteer mods, we have had to be a bit more blunt and generic.

We - 'the mods of TAM' - hope that those who have received messages on this topic, will recognize that our intent is simply to manage the tone on TAM, not to offend posters.

If anyone has questions about this new policy, feel free to post them on this thread.

To everyone on TAM - new policy

What do you mean by "defeating the obscenity filter"?

Is it violation to say a person is *****ing?

Is it a violation to substitute one letter in a "banned" word?

This is an adult site. Do we really need the mods to police if someone says the spouse is being an a$$?

I am conservative yet I don't feel we have a problem with the filters. I see more of a problem with lack of uniformity in how the mods operate. I have see mods complaining of threadjacking while doing the same.

Where do we find this new policy and what is the basis or driving need for the change?

8. Filter Bypass/Obscenity: A profanity filter is in place and any attempts to bypass it are forbidden. You MAY type words that are filtered, as long as they are not abusive towards other quests or violate any other rules; however, you must allow the filter to do its job. Do NOT try to filter the word yourself and do not try to use creative spelling to bypass the profanity filter. Also, posting images of videos of obscene gestures, linking to obscene web sites, posting obscene or graphic descriptions of a decidedly adult nature, and violating a standard of decent behavior is not allowed.

February 21st is the deadline for full enforcement of the measure.

"ass" is not a filtered word.

Using creative spelling for words like fvck is circumventing/defeating the profanity filter. Just spell it out, quit being cute, ****. The filter will catch it. See how that works. There is filter for a reason.

It's the owners of TAM who put the filter in place, not the mods. It's the job of the mods to follow the wishes of the owners of TAM. It's pretty simple.

Got it.

But can you clarify what is meant by "Do NOT try to filter the word itself..". I have no idea what is meant by that.

...
a quick test of the filter yielded quite a few surprises. There are a number of words that were not banned that I thought would be.
Still I see that the point is the tone.

Will writing "c°cktail" in a Social thread, or any actually, get me banned?

Sigh, my wife gives me the speaking treatment.

Re: To everyone on TAM - new policy

As it turns out I have at least one of those posts (since EleGirl edited at least one of them, which I only noticed because she 'liked' the post) and perhaps a limited few more?

Since this website limits how far back you can go looking for old posts. Am I right to presume, all of us don't have to go trawling through previous posts in order to remove past expletives?

That means to spell out the word and not type in **** ... let the filter do the star replacement. I think that is because what is actually typed goes into the database. the filter works on display. So if the filter is changed, what is displayed changes.

Maybe we should use ROT13 for questionable content 😁

We went back to 2/1/2017 in posting the notices. And yep, you got one as did a lot of others.

No one has to go back and change past posts.

Are acronyms such as WTF, OMFG, JFC, etc ban-able offenses also?

Good question.

On the way down without a ****tail in sight, some of us were allowed to have a look inside the ****pit. Once the flight was over and we stepped off the ramp, I told my troops to go to "action", which saw all of them **** their weapons, as a few ****atoos flew by.

As I understand it and I could be very wrong, they're all okay except for the second one which is a contraction that might be interpreted as contravening the filter?

Re: To everyone on TAM - new policy

Well, I certainly will abide by the rule... but I think some of the variations people come up with here on TAM are clever and down right hilarious. And they add a lot, especially when an expletive is the perfect word, or adds a bit of humor.

I think the readability will be much clunkier trying to wade through a bunch of asterisks trying to guess which word it's supposed to be. And I, for one, will miss many of the creative spellings...
