I am sooo way out of my league here, but my wife is 47 and she goes through the same thought process you are before we go to the beach. For her, she will look on Chadwicks for summer dresses, although she says that their trends have changed a little recently to where they don't have what she likes as much. The last time we scheduled a big beach vacation, she got a Kohl's card, AND saved the huge discount cards within their mailings for combined savings that let her buy a large wardrobe without a lot of guilt about the price. We really enjoy early morning walks on the beach, wading in the shallows, so she tends to like certain styles of shorts - she has AMAZING legs!!!

We usually stop at a local shop for hats.

Now, we live in a small suburb that has a high percentage of business executives. My wife is pretty conservative with spending, and when she found a consignment shop full of designer clothes priced at next to nothing, it made her day.

I like dresses but usually wear pants, but I think I will get some dresses for this trip.

Are gladiator sandals a no-no? I am tall so I need something without heels, and that's the only sandals I can find besides flip flips and running shoe style.

Bring comfortable shoes--there are stunningly beautiful hikes and trails in Hawaii.

Remember the motto of the islands is "hang loose". I remember walking by some upscale resort having a black tie formal event and those people all just looked so out of place (nicely dressed though!). But don't bring your ripped up denim either.

I'd say a couple of the sundress types too. Maybe a couple solid colors & a print one (maybe Hawaiian print?) That poncho would be great over any of it incase of a chilly day. I'd do a couple hawaiian shirts too- with comfy jeans.

those comfy looking sandals with the jewels (the yellow box style that were in that link)... would go good with either dress up or dress down days.

Hawaii is a very kick back place ( My husband is from Hawaii)... over thinking the dressing part... think comfortable simple ... a nice summer type dress.. simply accessorize with the right things :

DAY: Keep simple, light accessories, fun, casual... simple sandals.. lighter make up

NIGHT: Add some nice earrings, bracelet, nicer shoes .. add a bit more make up if you are out in the evening for dinner lets say...

The key is to enjoy the trip.. relax and wear what comes natural to how you feel that day!

Well I did get some jewellery too. I NEVER wear jewellery!! Except for my ring and earrings sometimes.

Tonight I am going shopping for sundresses and hiking sandals!!

Thanks for all the pointers!!! I agree, the bamboo clogs-flank steak skirt, mud nipple covers and bacon earrings look is probably not a good idea

Never been there but I can tell you in West Africa that the tourists all look more scared and miserable than the natives. Wear whatever you like and tell everyone to piss off
