I am not married and have never been married. For most of my adult life I have maintained that I am simply not the marrying kind. But the older I get, the more I realize that that posture is at least in part a defense mechanism, and although I think I do sincerely enjoy being single, I don't want to reject the idea of relationship reflexively. I like to read sites like this because they grapple with all the things people go through in relationships and marriages, the good, the bad, and the ugly. I think perhaps we'd all be better off if more people didn't think marriage was the rule rather than the exception, that should only be undertaken when people have acquired the tools to make it work, have figured themselves out a little more than it seems as if so many have done--hence the 50 per cent divorce rate. But on the other hand, I am the product of a 55 plus year relationship, one in which they are the center of each other's lives, and have worked out many challenges between them over the years. So I believe it's possible, and although not easy, it can absolutely be worth it.
