Guns in Australia ? Firearms, gun law and gun control
Single fire shotguns and bolt action rifles? Maybe a flintlock? I'm sure violent criminals live in absolute terror of those. Are Australian police similarly armed?

The third leading cause of death in America is medical malpractice in all its flavors. And that's according to the AMA. We should abolish doctors and save lives.

Depending on your sources, death via medical malpractice is around nine times more than death by firearm. So you are probably safer walking thru Chicago with a cardboard sign filled with racial slurs then you are checking into a hospital. Cars are far more deadly, so is alcohol and tobacco.

This thread and gun control in general isn't about saving lives, its about politics.

The control freaks have always been around, long before the "rash of violence" we are dealing with today. Georgia’s state legislature passed a law in 1837 that banned the sale of knives “used for offensive or defensive purposes” and all pistols except “horseman’s pistols.” Possession of those weapons was also prohibited, unless the weapons were worn in plain sight. This was in affect for 8 years until overturned by Nunn v. Georgia.

You will always have to fight for your rights against some busybody who knows better.

I've already stated that I'm not completely opposed to that approach.

With respect, sapientia, you seem to be expressing yourself as one who believes that firearms regulation in the U.S. originates purely at the federal level and is therefore homogeneous. That's not the case. Firearms law in the U.S. is a state by state affair and like I pointed out, there are areas of the U.S. that have implemented regulations on storage, travel, public possession and display on par with Canada.

When that was pointed out, the first question out of the gate was what those states are doing to prevent firearms from being brought in from other states, which borders on a non sequitur if all we're talking about is increased regulation on the use of firearms as opposed to actually making possession illegal in and of itself.

Interesting study about mass shootings, and why America leads in this area:

In part is something called the fallacy of observeability. We notice what we want to notice to some extent. For instance, there's tons of shootings in South Africa, Mozambique and the general region of southern Africa. There's tons of shootings in Colombia and Venezuela. But either we don't notice it or don't care or in a backhanded way, expect it to occur.

This is why black on black violence is reported but few are outraged by it. There's shootings all the time in the inner city - American cities are seeing a big uptick in murders this year - some places 2x the rate of last year. But because of where they occur and the fact that it's ones and twos, no one is irate.

There's a great example of this in the TV show "Numb3rs". A man shoots at the side of a barn randomly. In one area there's a cluster of shots. Draw a circle around that cluster and declare yourself a sharpshooter, ignoring all the other bullets.

The Swiss keep real true military weapons in their homes, yet don't have mass public shootings. Why is that?

Re: America has a problem with gun insanity

Thor,

You maintain that
Quote:
Studies show between 250,000 and 3,000,000 successful legitimate self defense uses of firearms every year.
Furthermore, you note that is bad urban crime areas, e.g., Detroit, were struck from the gun violence statistics, then the US murder rate would be like Western Europe and other wealthy first world countries. If both assertions are true, where is the successful legitimate self defense use of firearms taking place?

In the low crime normal America? If this true, then America is actually in a perpetual orgy of violence. if the legitimate self defense is taking place in the among the Black and Hispanic urban communities, then the answer would seem to be martial law.

Also, if handguns are so great, shouldn't everybody wear a holster?

A detailed mathematical examination of the effects of Australia's gun buy back shows no reduction in firearm related homicide or suicide rates.

then pretty much anything you linked in this whole thread can be tossed out. Any data or research you don't agree with, you attack the source not the findings or methods or other. Basically, you are reverting to name calling because you can't win the argument.
