It's a novel, not a true story.

No, the writer of that article is writing a novel "based on" this story, but claims it is true.

However, you never know. After all, Eat, Pray, Love was a supposedly true story too, but apparently the details were a little bit enhanced.

@tech-novelist

Thank you for giving me the opportunity to straighten out what is a common misconception, one which you too are guilty of having along with a sizeable segment of the population.

When a TV show, a book, a movie, or whatever claims to be "based on a true story" that means absolutely nothing.

Do you know that the creator of "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" based his movie on a "true story" as well? They initially went so far as to say it "WAS" a true story to increase the marketability of the film.

Truth is the writer walked into a hardware store one day and he saw a display of chainsaws and was thus inspired to make a horror movie of a bunch of people getting cut into little pieces by a crazy guy with a chainsaw. It is "loosely based" on the story of a real life serial killer but you'd never know it because the movie is so different from the real story, for example the real life serial killer didn't even use a chainsaw.

Here's a link to 10 movies of assorted genre supposedly "based on true stories" that bear little to no resemblence to their prototypes.

Re: It's never too young to start

@caruso - really well said. Another common misconception are editorial pieces being used as a factual news source.
