Last month, Hall opened an e-mail from a friend. Inside the e-mail was a link to an amateur production of her play at Kent State University. Hall clicked on the link and was taken aback.

The actor pictured on stage looked similar to MLK in every other production of “The Mountaintop” save for one detail.

His skin.

“At first glance I was like, ‘Unh-uh, maybe he light-skinned. Don’t punish the brother for being able to pass,'” Hall wrote Monday on the Root. “But further Googling told me otherwise.”

Martin Luther King was now white.

The controversial production, and Hall’s angry reaction, have opened a debate about the limits of non-traditional casting at a time when race is under a microscope in America.

As actors of color increasingly play traditionally white roles, breaking Broadway’s color barriers, should the opposite be true as well? Should a white man be allowed to play a black historical figure as important as Martin Luther King?

Not in my play, Hall answered.

So if there wasn't a black actor available, would she rather the performance of her play just be cancelled entirely?

no, he has not been properly vetted. His business connections are in conflict with the job of being president.
He *IS* a bigot. He *IS* a con-man. He is a *CHEATER* on 3 wives / exwives. No "liberal" media is required to see that. His actions, his lies and complete lack of transparancy are already problematic. His connection to neo-nazis is terrifying. Again, Trump and his sons do this themselves.

Transprancy & Lie = "Tax returns" = IRS and everyone else has stated "Being audited doesn't keep you from releasing your tax returns to the public" - Trump says that *IS* his excuse. So, that is a big lie. His connection with Russians (which you care nothing about) is traitorous and very deadly to or national security. HE isn't draining the swamp, he's filling it up. Think about how you talk to co-workers vs how you talk to clients vs talking to the teacher of your school. The language and such that I use with fellow techies vs clients is different... because going overly technical with a client is a waste of both of our time.

What is opposite of "liberal media", for which seems to be ANYTHING that isn't right-wing. Ever thought, that maybe hard core right-ring propaganda is maybe lying to you?
Its in our Consitution. You know, that thing that trump doesn't like.

"The First Amendment to the United States Constitution prohibits the making of any law respecting an establishment of religion, ensuring that there is no prohibition on the free exercise of religion, abridging the freedom of speech, infringing on the freedom of the press, interfering with the right to peaceably assemble, or prohibiting the petitioning for a governmental redress of grievances. It was adopted on December 15, 1791, as one of the ten amendments that constitute the Bill of Rights."

The word liberal = freedom / liberty. So you are against American freedom? Isn't that is whats supposed to make the USA a great country?
The countries that have a media that only says NICE things about their leader or party... are usually in a dictatorship or communist (Russia , China, N.Korea, many middle eastern countries)
Let that sink in.
I agree with much of what you said here. Fine post. But I think it is important to have high standards of *both* sides.

Hillary is too conservative for my liking, and I am glad she was called out. The reason she could not call out Trump more is that her hands were not clean, either.

I am not sure Trump does not like the American constitution. I think it is just as likely that he is not familiar with it.

TaDor you are making a completely straw man argument, hiding behind the dictionary definition of the words liberal and conservative, rather than judging the views, actions and policies of the people who are using those words to describe themselves.

I'm with you, the definitions matter, but sadly, the people that label themselves under both of these terms are not well described by the textbook definitions.

For example, "Liberals" in the US today include in their platforms, things such as "Safe Spaces" and gun bans. Both are inherently anti-freedom. Whereas Conservatives are opposed to both of these, and so they are in these cases pro-freedom. There are many other examples. In fact, many people who identify as "liberal" but have an issue with these "liberal" policies have taken to referring to the people on the left promoting such polices as the "Regressive Left".

When you defend "liberal" people and publications solely on the textbook definition, and not on their actual policies, you are behaving the same way as feminists who try to pretend that their movement hasn't been hijacked by a bunch of man-hating female supremacists.

Today, Liberal in the US has become a pejorative for those of us who have an issue with freedom-hating lefties. (Which doesn't include all lefties) Because these people identify as "liberal", whether they are or aren't. Until the liberals have the courage and fortitude to purge themselves of this Regressive faction, and refuse to be identified along side them, this will continue, and the textbook definitions will not apply.

This is really the only part of your post I care about.

How is a "Safe Spaces" "anti-freedom". I get that you don't like the concept of a place where someone can be without letting other people belittle them with hate speech, but is it different than a church that kicks out someone who talks about atheism? And most liberals do not favor "gun bans". That is a narrative that is false but continued to be thrown around. Most liberals want certain kinds of guns, ones that are mainly created for mass killings, to be banned. Most guns (and the vast majority of guns in America are hand guns would not fall into this category and most liberals want them controlled better.

In government spaces, it is not permitted that we prevent free speech. Particularly, these "Safe Spaces" are used to no-platform any speakers who hold views that the left does not like / does not agree with. Do I have a problem with a person creating a "safe space" on their property? No. Do I have a problem with the government (and government run/funded entities like universities) saying that allowing dissenting ideas violates "safe space" policies? Yes.

The stated purpose of "Safe Spaces" is to create an environment where everyone feels safe to share their opinions. However, such spaces are designed to prevent any dissent, thus creating a hostile environment for people who may want to share their opinions. The idea of safe spaces requires an unbelievable level of indoctrination and cognitive dissonance to be held.

RE Guns: You try to retreat to the term "most" which leaves plenty of room in your camp for these ideas. Further, the more restrictions we place, the less freedom. You have now dismantled the entire idea of liberal = freedom.Thank you. Now if we want to have a discussion on whether or not people should have that freedom, that's a different argument entirely. But nonetheless, my point is proven.

Thank you Hershel, for taking up the mantle of Regressive Left for me. It is much appreciated to have people demonstrate this, rather than just having it come from me, as I could be considered a hostile source. Would you care to bring up some more freedoms that the Regressive Left opposes so we can continue to properly describe this situation?

And there is no Trump Russian connection. Are you a left wing conspiracy nut?
There are more facts about trump's russian connection than anything in emails. What about trump's emails? You are totally disgrading everything that is wrong with trump based on what? And, no - its based off of trump's history and his own words and actions, is that so hard to understand? Are you a right wing conspiracy nut?

You and many people here are on this board to discuss infidelity. He cheated on wife #1 with wife #2, he cheated wife #2 with wife #3. And he's talked about sexual assaults and hitting on married women while being married to wife #3. Newt and Rudy are both 3x married cheaters... best-o-friends of trump, that shows character. He's also good friends with Roger Ailes - you know, the ex-had guy of foxnews, who has blackmailed or demanded sex from his employees and female contractors for decades - even telling them to have sex with HIS friends (Rudy, trump, etc? Who knows). This is why he was fired from fox and they have paid out settlement(s) as that mess is ongoing.

But that's okay, trust the guy who has ripped off thousands of Americans with his fake university - that he just settled for $25million. Nevermind that he raked in over $100million.

He's a disgusting human being with no real values. He's a racist and a bigot. He's got very thin skinned. he dishes out insults daily - but whines like a little B if someone hurts his feelings. He is the very definition of a narcissist, the white house is about him. Not about you or anyone else. He's a con-man and he's already conning the people who voted for him. Every person he is bringing in, has a history of screwing over people and tax payers or they are a special kind of stupid or bigots. "alt-right" is just another name for neo-nazi, sounds nicer to the general public. But its the same people at the top.

Trump "intel" comes from the likes of infowars (he retweets or talks about junk he learned from him) ... the blogger site that says Sandy Hook was fake and sells pills to get hardons and make you "smart". Yeah, thats a great place to get your "news"?

But its easier to concentrate on emails (which the FBI said they are done with) and Benghazi - which CLinton did not cause but no complaints from fox/R-Wradio about the dozens of embassy attacks during bush. Or that only 1 investigation was done about 9/11 attacks vs Clinton's 8. She has released decades of tax-records. Trump, nothing and lies about it. But he's the one you trust?

Seriously, over and over again - tax records would show WHO he does business with, who he owes money, etc. It would show is actual wealth too, which is likely a lot lower than he says. He is not transparent, he is bringing in the very "elites" who have screwed people over. So yeah, this is common knowlege stuff - many of it is years or decades old.

2 - Geez. Okay, use a thing called GOOGLE and locate all the anti-gun bills in the past 10 years or so. Find ANY bill or law that says "the govt. will take away your guns". Not a blog post, not a rant. But an ACTUAL bill by anyone. Liberals own guns too. (I'm not a liberal) The only things submitted are "if you are on a no-fly list, you don't get to buy a gun" (makes sense) or "if you are a criminal or have legal issues regarding domestic violence, you don't get to buy guns" - since its geneally a good idea to NOT make it easy for badguys to buy guns. Regulations are part of ANY society. We have regulations to drive on the same side of the road, that green lights mean go, that children shouldn't be able to buy booze, that a corporation doesn't have the right to dump toxic chemicals into our rivers (remember the 60s & 70s?).

Conservatives are not pro-freedom. They are pro-gun, pro-christian, pro-male. They are very obvious against women's rights, or those who are not hetrosexual. How are THOSE things about saving jobs? They are not. How are they about "freedom", they are not. They are "pro" within their own world which doesn't represent much of the population.

Again, please provide actual evidence of ANY laws proposed to take away law-biding people's guns.

Okay, let's argue in good faith, rather than attacking straw men here TaDor.

1. Who says Trump is Conservative? Not Trump. Not Conservatives. Pretty much no one. So your Trump comment is off base. He's a Republican. Republican =/= Conservative. (Although Conservatives tend to vote Republican)

I will take your lack of arguing against liberal support of safe spaces and free speech laws as evidence that you admit they do exactly that. Therefore Liberal =/= pro freedom

2. Let's ask these questions about the no-fly list: How do you get on it? How do you find out you're on it? How do you get off? [Hint you're not A) accused B) tried or C) convicted of any crime]
Now, let's follow those answers up with this question: is it just to strip a person of their Constitutional Rights without a trial? Would you say this about the 4th Amendment? The 5th? Any Amendment? Is that a liberal position? Is it a pro-freedom position?

The regulations argumentation further proves my point. Liberal =/= pro freedom. It can't. I'm not arguing Liberal = bad. I'm not arguing Conservative = good. I'm not even arguing that Regulations are always bad. I'm arguing that they restrict freedom.

Your whole post lacks nuanced understanding of movements and groups of people. Neither Conservatives nor Liberals are "pro freedom". That is a childish view of the world. It places people into black and white caricatures of their real selves.
