What do you think of this?

W.Va. official who lost job over racist Michelle Obama remark quietly reinstated

A West Virginia government employee who was removed from her position for a Facebook post referring to first lady Michelle Obama as an "ape in heels" will get her job back, according to recent reports.

Pamela Taylor, director of the Clay County Development Corp., was fired in early November after she said "It will be refreshing to have a classy, beautiful, dignified First Lady in the White House. I'm tired of seeing a Ape in heels."

The Clay County Development Corp. announced on Saturday that Taylor would be reinstated on Dec. 23.

The post also cost the local mayor her job. Former Clay Mayor Beverly Whaling resigned after commenting that Taylor's post "just made my day."

The post was a source of public outrage, with nearly 1,500 people demanding the resignations of both via a petition. The two have since made public apologies.

You're surprised?

Unless you are living in one of the few liberal enclaves in the rust belt, the above comments aren't exactly news...

Shocked, actually.

I guess my house qualifies as a liberal enclave in the Midwest?

If this is "normal," then, No, I don't know about it.

I believe in free speech. Better to have things said and worked through than hidden and festering.

But this sort of thing tests the limits of my belief.

I do think that is an interesting point. Where are the limits?

Just curious, though, Dave, does what was said bother you?

I don't agree with how she stated her dislike for the 1st lady, but I can see why someone would dislike anyone.

Lol. I bet it is cold.

Yes, I am shocked by racism. Maybe it is naive on my part. But yes, I am shocked.

Agreed and good point. FB is utilized in job recruiting. I know of once person not hired due to what was posted on the individuals FB pages.

I certainly agree that no one is obligated to like anyone else.

I am disturbed by what might be the underlying reason for that dislike.

Do you think if the same person had posted that Melania Trump looked like an ape in heels, the person would have lost their job?

That is a good question, karole. Though, in her case, it likely would have been a slur against illegal immigrants.

You know, thinking more about it, what is sad is that it probably actually would be tolerated!

I'm not surprised. Government employees are almost impossible to fire.

There is a difference here as a person of color had the comment directed at them. This creates a racial overtone and for good reason. It is racially motivated. To say this about Melania does not carry similar racial overtone as it does for the Michelle.

This individual may not be fired but certainly any forthcoming promotions are not the cards.
