Re: Making College Campuses More Amenable To “marginalized student populations.” ...

"Students be allowed the choice of different gender roommates in the residence halls through random matching."

I wished they'd had this in place when I attended the University of Wisconsin so many years ago. I would have loved to have a chick as my roommate instead of that dork I had. (he's still a friend of mine and would tell you the same thing). What's especially humorous about this whole issue are the humanist, with their carping about religious symbols, prayer and other like activities on campus, are going to have to acquiesce to the Muslims. I wonder what front they'll come up with to save face.

Because there is a whole "generation privilege" thing going on.

Didn't previous students of older generations encourage a "melting pot" culture?

Now it's all about "me, myself and I"
"I'm a victim"
"I need special privilege"
"I need attention"

They don't understand the meaning of Equality.
To them, equality = me

Great academics as well, fantastic campus, great sports, and crappy beer. What more does a college kid want

Maryland - the taxes of Massachusetts with the hip factor of Connecticut. I'm glad some things are left to the states.

My wife texted asking me if I was sitting down, and I knew what was coming next.

Yet Western Maryland is beautiful, and Eastern Maryland has tons of job opportunities...

I'm sure Idaho is nice too

I was technically smart but socially / politically idiotic when I went to college. I saw the entire world through the distorted lens of a 17 year old who had minimal experience with the real world.

I think is easy to forget how young and inexperienced college kids really are.

Ugh. Much of this marginalization talk is about feelings. Paranoia, inferiority, resentment. How can you expect your university or workplace or whatever to protect you from your own feelings?

I don't see how any group can demand more rights than any other. Yes, demand equal rights. Yes, punish anyone that tries to prevent you from exercising those rights, but insisting on special rights is going too far.

Re: Making College Campuses More Amenable To “marginalized student populations.” ...

I'm surprised the students that feel marginalized because they don't have the latest equipment to fulfill the expectation of "state of the art" access and responsiveness to social media, aren't making demands for colleges and universities to supply this equipment. It's like my cousin from Lafayette Louisiana would say, "dat belle soeur my brother married to kant stand it and go all crazy when she sees someone wid a newer cell phone". If Hillery got elected, maybe the school could have done all the upgrades under the Obama Phone program.

It is true. The are schoolkids, then a few months later judged as grown adults.

Re: Making College Campuses More Amenable To “marginalized student populations.” ...

How are some of these really that terrible, like requesting more Halal or Kosher meals being available at a college that has a large population of those students?

I feel like if someone is forced to pay into a $3,000 meal plan, they should be able to get something to eat.

As for the roommate thing, the fact that at 18 you can in theory get drafted to die in the Army or can sign away your life with school crushing student debt but can't get a beer and we are terrified you might have sex is amusing and sad.

How is wanting to teach about Native American History terrible? Or the fact that a college is investing money in a for-profit prison not really disturbing.

The deep south school I did my MA had halal and kosher options on the menu in the early 80's.
