Marine Le Pen Refuses to Wear Headscarf

Quote:
PARIS—Marine Le Pen, the presidential candidate for France’s far-right National Front, seized on a trip to Lebanon to showcase her hard line on Islamic custom, refusing Tuesday to wear a head scarf and upending her plans to meet with the country’s senior Sunni Muslim cleric.

...

"When she arrived, the [staff] were surprised by her refusal to abide” by the protocol, Dar al-Fatwa said in a statement carried by the National News Agency.

...

"It doesn’t matter. Pass on my considerations to the Grand Mufti but I will not veil myself,” Ms. Le Pen told reporters before turning back to a waiting car.

Marine Le Pen said, "I consider the headscarf a symbol of a woman's submission."

I support and commend her refusal.

Yes, good for her. No woman should be forced/pressured into wearing a headscarf/hijab. I'd like to see more women doing the same thing (as long as they weren't putting their lives in danger by doing so).

But I'd be more excited for her if she wasn't a quasi-fascist doing this as an astute political move right before the election.

I laughed pretty hard when I read this the other day. Good on her.

I sincerely hope she wins in the second round. France needs someone like her more than they need another Leftist apologist for Muslim violence.

I think that within reason one should wear clothing that is considered polite when visiting another country. I consider a head scarf to be reasonable. A Hijab would not be.

I support her, but whether she thinks the veil is a sign of oppression is beside the point.

The point is that she doesn't have to conform herself to their values, just as Muslims are fond of screaming that they shouldn't be forced to give up their values in western countries.

They scream when Muslim women go abroad and can't wear a scarf.......they want to be able to keep to their norms when in other countries so why aren't non muslims afforded the same consideration in Muslim countries?

Re: Marine Le Pen Refuses to Wear Headscarf

Do you know if they were talking about a veil or a headscarf.

Maybe its just my culture, but I don't find a simple headscarf that covers the hair to be a problem. Its a common form of dress by women in many cultures. I find a veil or other face covering to be much more problematic.

To me a scarf is on the same level as wearing or not-wearing shoes in certain situations depending on the culture.

Re: Marine Le Pen Refuses to Wear Headscarf

Men and women both wear/don't wear shoes in certain social situations. It would be the same if men were also wearing head scarves. Good for her, but I think it was a totally political move as well.
