Re: Trump needs to lay off the states on the pot issue

In recent national polls, most Americans are against a federal crackdown on legalized marijuana. A very recent Quinnipiac poll found that 71% of Americans oppose and enforcement of federal marijuana laws in states where it is now legal. https://poll.qu.edu/national/release...ReleaseID=2432

In October 2015, Trump himself said that the issue of recreational marijuana should be left up to the states.

Marijuana is much less addictive than alcohol. Why should alcohol and cigarettes be legal, but not marijuana?

Because if marijuana becomes legal, it becomes an alternative to alcohol. A huge portion of grain and corn production goes toward distilling. If the consumption of alcohol takes a hit, grain farmers end up hurting. Cannabis is more taxing on soil than corn or grain. It is more expensive to farm and less profitable. Legalizing cannabis would upset the current institutionalized subsidy system that farmers have enjoyed for the last fifty years. For them to make the transition from growing grains to growing pot would be difficult, expensive and many would lose their asses.

It is American farmers who have been the biggest proponents of the illegalization of cannabis, backed by their friends in congress. They need to maintain the status quo.

The only advantage to legalizing cannabis would be that it would be taxable.

Ok, who wants to bet me ten bucks with me betting that Trump will not go after the states on this issue. You pick the time frame and we'll settle up via PM and US mail within 48 hours. One customer only. Bear in mind its action rather than rhetoric that wins the bet.

If you don't embody controversy, what you say will become just another part of the media driven culture of stifling thought and debate about issues.

Re: Trump needs to lay off the states on the pot issue

Trump's stance on marijuana is causing many states to rethink even medical use of marijuana. If we stop allowing it for medical use where does that leave people for whom it's the only solution they've ever found? Are you going to take it away from them? I would rather see recreational marijuana legalized than ALL marijuana use criminalized again.

My home town is trying to legalize heroin use as long as it's only done in a city safe house. I find that much more worrisome than legalizing pot.

There is a YouTube video showing how cannabis vapor can help kids with severe autism. I'll find it and post it.

A funny story about my ancestry. As mentioned, most of my family on both sides were drunks.

My Maternal Grandparents were members of the Temperance Union. Marching, sign toting, Speak Easy busters. All their children became drunks.

It is the way of the flesh. Each alternating generation swings in the opposite direction as did their parents.

I did this....alternate thing. My parents were drunks, my brothers and sisters "were" drunks. They followed along the wet path.

I swung hard in the opposite direction. My high came from "Run, Bike, Swim". Diving out of perfectly good aircraft.
Since you brought it up, how did alcohol Prohibition work out?

Drug prohibition has been just as big a "success".

Alcohol prohibition is impossible to enforce. Thanks to the Mafia, and Al Capone types. Any hillbilly worth his salt can make alcohol [moonshine]. And bathtub gin!

Drug prohibition is easier. You need to be a rudimentary chemist to make drugs. Marijuana plants are easily spotted from the air. The components that go into drugs are harder to obtain today.

It is the opiates that endanger our youth....kill them when laced with Fentanyl, etc. Catch the big dealers and lock them up forever.

Yes, alcohol is the bigger problem.

Why compound our drug problem by permitting lesser drugs like pot, to appease junkies. And new junkies. Pot kills ambition. I do not want to support pot heads on welfare and unemployment.

Wow, so many erroneous assumptions by those opposed to legalization. So suddenly out of the blue millions of Americans are going to just start abusing (currently illegal) drugs because now they would be legal? Corn farmers would go out of business? Cannabis is more destructive to the soil than corn is? Such interesting comments, I would love to see the articles these little factoids were gleaned from.

There would also be a large reduction in law enforcement and justice system costs.

And a bunch of happy stoned people.....

Never said they would go out of business. All I said was that they would most likely not give up subsidies to switch from a food/fuel crops to cannabis. Why would they? How does it benefit farmers financially to do so?
