Default Gain a spouse and you'll likely gain some pounds, too

By Nanci Hellmich, USA TODAY

NEW ORLEANS — Young adults might want to change their wedding vows to say they are taking each other "for better or girth."
Many married and single people in their late teens and early 20s gain a significant amount of weight — an average of 15 to 30 pounds — over five years. But newly married men and women in that age group gain 6 to 9 pounds more than their peers who are single and dating.

These are among the findings of a study released Monday at the annual meeting of the Obesity Society, a group of weight-loss scientists and professionals.

The study confirms other research that shows young adults are especially vulnerable to putting on pounds, and gaining weight is socially contagious.

"The weight gain in this age group is frightening," says Penny Gordon-Larsen, an assistant professor of nutrition in the school of public health at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill.

FIND MORE STORIES IN: Obesity | Penny Gordon-Larsen
She has done other research on that age group and found that the number of people who become obese — 30 or more pounds over a healthy weight — increases significantly from the teens to young adulthood.

Gordon-Larsen and her colleagues followed almost 8,000 people, ages 12 to 28, over five years and a subsample of 1,200 couples. Among their findings:

•Women in their teens and early 20s who continued to date but didn't cohabitate gained an average of 15 pounds over five years; their male counterparts added about 24 pounds.

•Newly married women in that age group packed on 24 pounds in five years; newly married men gained 30 pounds.

That degree of gain wasn't seen in couples who were living together but not married. Women gained 3 pounds more than their single peers — 18 pounds — and men gained 24 pounds.

"When people are dating, there may be more incentive to be thin," Gordon-Larsen says.

Single young adults tend to be the most active, watch the least amount of TV and are the least likely to be obese, says Natalie The, a researcher at the University of North Carolina.

She says many factors probably contribute to couples' weight, including having children, post-pregnancy pounds, having less time to exercise and eating out more or cooking bigger meals.

A study released this summer showed that one person's obesity can significantly increase the chance that his or her friends, siblings and spouse also will become heavy, and if a person slims down, the people around him or her also may lose weight.

"Ideally, we'd like to shift the influence couples can have on each other to positive behaviors, so they can support each other to get to a healthy weight and maintain it," Gordon-Larsen says.

I already knew that marrying my huband would affect my wasitline and now I have the proof. My husband loves ice cream and cookies! I have no will power when it comes to cookies.

LOL-I gain quite a bit a few years ago but decided to lose it last year. My wife is at the same amount as when we met maybe a few pounds less. That is after three kids too.

I don't know I personally am at the same weight and that is after two kids. But I could see how this could happen. Especially if you married a good cook.

I had my second child in May, and I still have extra 15 pounds to lose. My husband makes it really difficult to lose weight, since he likes sweets in the house. I started eating sweets on a regular basis after dating, and marrying my husband. I would like to be comfortable in a bathing suit on my vacation next month.

That is what my wife had said to me since I do the cooking. SHe wasn't use to eating regular meals before me. Recently we have started making healthier choices in meals that taste just as good.

Just keep on it or better yet try to get the husband on board. Let him get his sweets on the way to work so the house remains snack free. Another thing you can do is ask to go on walks together pushing the baby health for you and the relationship.

So hopefully between that and starting to go to the gym, something good will emerge!
Sounds like you are on a good plan is the hubby going to the gym with you?

That is reallt to bad becuase losing weight together can be a really good way to get close to your partner. Gym buddies. Plus going to the gym can pump up your sexual hormones and what better of a life to both come home a little hornier together.

Maybe after he starts to see how good you look he'll want to better himself for you too.

I had to laugh when you suggested my husband pick up stuff on the way to work (he works from home). He is so skinny and he really does not worry about his weight, and my concern for weight has only recently started after having two kids and with my metabolism slowing down as I get older....Anyway, I am going to start walking in the park with my kids since the weather has finally gotten nice here in Louisiana. I should really be able to start some kind of excerise plan since my baby is getting older.

I've heard this happen a lot to people in serious relationships and marriage. On the other hand, I'm skinnier now after a few years of marriage than when I was dating. Learning to cook and having someone to go be active with was a large part of the weight loss.

We both go to the gym together. It's really nice.

Stress (cortisole) can make it hard to lose weight.

Cortisol ~ corticosteroid hormone produced by the adrenal gland. It is a vital hormone that is often referred to as the "stress hormone" as it is involved in the response to stress. It increases blood pressure, blood sugar levels and has an immunosuppressive action.
