I've noticed for about the past three years, minority religions are finally starting to stick up for themselves and say 'hey, the United States is supposed to be about freedom from relgious pins, not Christianity.' and they're getting attacked for it. What the heck?
The Pledge of Allegiance, the dollar bill and court systems (until a few years ago) all were very Christian based even though 76%, not 100%, of the population is Christian. I'm glad that they've started pushing religion out of courts and schools, but it seems not everyone is. There isn't another form of religious influence, there is just lack there of.
Why do you think Christians are having such a hard time accepting that? If you are Christian, how do you feel about this? If you're another religion, does this make you feel better, not care or scared of how some people are reacting to it?
Sorry if the topic is too controversial, it's just the first thing that came to mind when I saw this forum section and lack of anything but Christian topics on the religious department.
As an atheist, I would prefer freedom FROM ALL religion in the political and public arenas. I do not wish anyone's religious beliefs to dictate or influence public policy.
BTW, the original Pledge of Allegiance did not include the words "under God". That was added by Congress during the Cold War era in a ploy to differentiate us and unify us against the "godless Commies".
That's how I feel as well. I'm pagan and I've studied a good bit on other religions, but I don't think that everyone should be trying to push their beliefs on others. If you want to express your religious views, do so in a calm manner online, in a place of worship or group of the same. If someone is curious, sure tell them, but don't scream "Here is a pamphlet, subscribe now or die!" or try telling your kids school that they need to start praying before class. @__@
I think I'm relieved by the fact religion is starting to make its way out of the government control. I use to go to inschool suspention for refusing to do the pledge of allegence and kicked out for being a 'smart ass' for explaining why.
God can be different for everyone. Atheists can just laugh and say, "No we don't."
I don't think about it, or care. I'm not religious, but have my own beliefs. Too many other issues to worry about.
I don't even say the pledge every day. I pledged once. Why do it everyday?? (I'm a teacher). I do stand with respect towards the flag, but I won't pledge everyday.

Generally, every single "group" in America will tend to say that they are the ones being picked on, while the rest are elevated. Some of my beliefs are from the native american side of my heritage, others from a protestant slant. I've noticed that it is only politically correct to make fun of Christianty in the media, but the PC police will go after anyone who pokes fun at another religion that exists in an organized form. In a magazine that I contribute to in a column, our guidelines only prohibit religious satire for another politically delicate religion (not Christian).

So would it be fair to say this is your belief that you wish others would adhere? Would you consider this "pushing" your views on others? I guess I do. They don't want to do it your way so if you really believed in not pushing your views on others you wouldnt be here complaining that they aren't doing it your way.
I'm sorry... Maybe I'm to simple to get the whole debate on religion and government... My rule is if you don't believe, don't participate... I'm agnostic to a certain degree... Hey if you asked me.. I'd tell religion is just the oldest longest pop culture... In school, I never said the pledge of allegiance... But that was for different reasons... If you would have told me its time to pray, I would say gon handle y'all business I'm a play my Gameboy in the meantime... As a mostly atheist kid growing up, wasn't much you could get me to do when it came to church, religion, or even praying....
People take themselves way too seriously regarding religion. Honestly. If you truly believe in what you believe, no amount of bad-talking it will make it untrue for you.

Right. Because no one makes fun of, say, $cientology (see what I did there?). Or centers jokes around any other religion. And Bill Maher certainly only singles out Chriatianity for ridicule.
No...I'd say that it might only SEEM like Christianity is the only religion made the butt of jokes because they not only don't seem to have a sense of humor about themselves, but very vocally don't have such a sense of humor, while most religions seem to get that a joke is just a joke. Culturally speaking, I am non practicing Christian. I am a wasp as they say. I celebrate Christmas because I grew up doing it and Santa Claus is fun. I am pretty much a non believer though. Certainly don't go to church. Growing up i got dragged to a huge baptist church and I got my fill there. Nice place, nice people, but not really my scene. But when somebody gets all bent out of shape about saying merry christmas or god in the pledge, I think they are being ridiculous. Posted via Mobile Device
I love stereotypical jokes that make fun of people, religion, races, etc. --- especially my own. Most of them are true!! Stop taking yourselves so seriously.

I'm not big on religion... But I'm one of those people that gets annoyed when people say happy holidays instead of Merry Christmas...
A holiday is a holiday no matter what you believe in... And if it's Happy Boxing Day... Well I'm gonna reply Happy Boxing Day to you... Then run home and Google it... But you get the point...

In his documentary Religulous, Bill Maher shows equal examples of followers of Christianity, Judaism and Islam all being equally ridiculous. Posted via Mobile Device

It does get annoying, to a degree, to Christians that we have to "hide" our beliefs to make everyone else happy...We are expected to take our beliefs, our symbols, our words out of everything so that everyone else of a different religion, or lack thereof, can express their beliefs/non-beliefs....
There was a case around here where there was a nativity scene on public property that was put there by the person that owned the place for Christmas...there was such an uproar about it that it had to be taken down..why??? It wasn't hurting anyone, it was there to symbolize the holiday. If you don't believe, or believe something different, why can't you just ignore it's existence and go on your happy way??? I just don't get it....
