Hi all.

I am new to this thread and I am looking for some help. My wife and I have been married for just under 3 years and are having all sorts of problems. I think alot of them come from a lack of communication and the ability to share and compromise. I just recently found out that she is Bi-Polar Depressant, which certainly complicates things. Plus there is issued with my stepson as well.

My questions is are there any weekend couples retreats that focus on building communication that is not religious. Most of what I find on google is sponsored through the church. It would be nice to find something within a 4 hour driving distance that has something like this. We live in Central NJ. Any help or suggestions would certainly be appreciated

are you dead-set on it being a retreat? have you thought of trying marriage counseling or buying some communication books?

there are some meditation retreats that i looked into a year ago. i think that would be a fantastic get away. i think sometimes just a calming of the soul opens up all kinds of positive communication.

I have to say that I get have been annoyed that there isn't a lot of affordable marriage counseling and/or retreats that are non-religious. My husband's health insurance though work does not cover mental health. So when we have gone to counselors/therapist it has often been though a religious group. Some of them have been good, but others have been terrible. One of them comes to mind. Shortly after we had introduced ourselves, but before we even explained our situation he opened his bible and said, "Well lets consult the good book to see where your problem lies...."
o.0 Of course he felt that our problem was that we were not christian enough and if we joined his church and was guided by him all our problems would just disappear...needless to say we didn't stay long and did not go back to him.

I did a quick google search, found this -didn't see any mention of anything religious, not sure if in your area or price range though. Google should give lots or results. Couples Retreat with John Grey, Ph.D.

Or call a local Marraige Counselor, surely they know what retreats are in the surrounding area.

I wish I had found this site a few years ago. I too think a non religious retreat would have been beneficial for me and my (now separated from) husband. I am jewish and he is not, therefor the church based retreats would not have worked. We did do indivdual counseling with different counselors and for a while joint counselfing with his. He did not want me going, he felt my going and working on our relationship took away from him working on his issues. We had/have major communication issues that never changed. We are legally married, just sold our marital home and each bought our new residence after splitting the proceeds. Thank you.
