In Novi Sad, Serbia. I'm pretty sure the missing parts all went into politics ...

Re: If you dare, post pictures you took

These are going back a few years - maybe about 2006 in Santa Cruz, CA. I was living in the Bay Area at this time. Because of the service hosting them, once again, I don't know if I have permissions right to share publicly, so someone will have to tell me if you can see them.

Sleeping Lions. They group together, sometime prop their heads up on each others bellies, and just float along in these little islands to sleep. I caught one group very near the Municipal Wharf.

And this guy, despite his bashful appearance, is actually quite surley ... if you get close to him, he can reach out with that big mouth and bite you. It appears he'd rather bite you than fly off, too. (You can see a group of sleeping sea lions in the background, too )

Re: If you dare, post pictures you took

This is the summer of either 2007, or 2008 - I can't remember for sure which. This is my wife and son with Heather Locklear. The story is better than the picture, I think

The Story: I was working field engineering at the time, and I had an engagement to the Polynesian Cultural Center in Laie on the North Shore of Oahu, Hawaii. (I just let the job work for me, folks.) Our son's school arrangements allowed my wife and him to travel with me on most of my trips. On trips like this, I'd get creative with my work schedule so I could get days where I could get out during the day, and my wife would plan out our days. This day, she planned out for us to start the day at Waimea Falls.

When we got to the falls, we could see it in the distance but it was closed because they were filming some movie named "Flirting with 40." I was just disappointed that we couldn't get closer to the falls, but I got the pictures I could, got my wife's picture with some big dude that was playing some bit part in the movie, and we decided to move on.

As we were walking back, this red pickup truck pulled up, and this blone woman got out of one door just a few steps from us. My wife's eyes immediately got wide and she said, "I want my picture with her." The guy in the background got out of the other door and as my wife, and several other people were approaching, he said, "She's got time for one picture only, then she has to get to work."

My wife had position, so she asked for the picture with my son. the lady complied, and the pressue was on me ... I didn't have time to get the lighting right or the angle right or anything like that, so I just got what I could get. Then the guy insisted she go to work.

I'm the biggest nerd in the world when it comes to celebrities. I don't watch TV. I can't sit through a movie, and honestly, they just aren't a big part of my life, so I don't even note what they look like ... but I could see this woman caused a big stir just by showing up and walking to the falls.

As we walked on, I asked my wife, "Who was that?"

She looked shocked and said, "You don't know Heather Locklear?"

I thought for a moment and said, "No, and I still don't know who she is. I've never heard that name before."

Later that night, I was thinking, "This Heather Locklear is obviously really famous. I was the only one there that didn't know who she was." So I decided to post this into the Field Engineer's "Non-technical discussion" forum. This was just an email forum we had to talk about social things while we were on the job. It was our Facebook before we had Facebook.

So I put the picture into an email and sent it to the group. I didn't put any text in the body, I just put a subject line that said, "Who's that woman with my wife??" (I thought that was a pretty clever title for a celebrity picture ). Within 5 minues I got 3 replies back saying, "Dude, which one is your wife?" I just threw my hands into the air in celebration and shouted, "I fit in!!"

Actually, a lot of the field engineers did recognize Heather Locklear, and my daughters both shot through the ceiling when I sent the picture to them, but it was just so funny to me to see such an obvious expression showing that there ARE other people out there like me - don't know anything about celebrities

Re: If you dare, post pictures you took

One of my favs from the old thread, I'm guessing shy guy missed this the first time. You never know what will pop up in Bratislava.

I've been meaning to take a pic of this for a while now, not my usual way home. Sorry about the quality. It is good advice but it's kinda scary that we need a sign that reads "WAIT FOR GREEN LIGHT". Really?

Sigh, my wife gives me the speaking treatment.

Re: If you dare, post pictures you took

In Busan, Korea. I just stumbled across it on a non-descrip side street in a place that had no indication I might find something like this. The sign on the side just phonetically spells out the English words "Mexican Chicken." I asked some of my Mexican friends if they thought the chef was Mexican. One said he thought it was the Korean version of "El Pollo Loco." Another asked me to take a picture of the menu so he could tell me. I told him the "Chicken and Beer" on the top of the store WAS the menu. (I was just joking with him of course. I actually never thought of taking a picture of the menu because I didn't eat here. I was actually on my way to the cemetary to pay respects to my mother-in-law when we found it).

And this was a few years prior (March, 2008) in Auckland, New Zealand:

We're all so inter-connected, though. This was also in Auckland, New Zealand. I had to take this picture for my wife because this was a trip I had to take on very short notice (4 hours from the time I got the call until I had to be on the plane), so she couldn't go with me . She and my son took most trips with me - especially the "exotic" trips.

This is a Karaoke place, and it doesn't surprise me to see a Karaoke place, nor to find a lot of Koreans in Auckland. What actually surprised me a bit is that they phonetically spell out "Karaoke" instead of using the Korean word "Norae bang."

And this is just the area of town where I was staying for that week in Auckland:

Re: If you dare, post pictures you took

This was just last month in Shanghai, very near where we live. Sometimes, you see a little kid that is just too cute, and you just have to capture a picture. One thing I like about here and Korea culturally is that when you see one of the ones you just want to capture a picture of, people don't just automatically assume you're a pervert. People seem to generally like having their kids get attention like having someone want to take a picture. This little girl was just an absolute doll.

Just remembered I'd forgotten to post this.

We took one of our grandsons away and part of his treat was to go to a car racing circuit.

The finale is a caravan banger destruction derby.

This is the aftermath.

Re: If you dare, post pictures you took

I want to go through my "Top 10 rooms with a view" if you can handle a flood from me, and if it doesn't discourage other people from posting ... I WANT other people to post.

Background: When I took a job that involved travel, I didn't think I would like it. However; it was a great opportunity, and my wife really encouraged it. We decided on how we could handle things so that she and my son could take many of the trips with me. It worked out with us getting more time together than the old job I had going into an office every day.

Soon after I took the job, I began to realize how fantastic some of the things I was getting to do really were. I started several albums just for fun. They included my "Sunrise-Sunset" album, my waterfalls album, mountains album, national parks, etc. My favorite album became my "Top 10 rooms with a view" album. To make it into this album the pictures had to be from a room where I stayed, or where I worked. These had to be business trips and not vacation. I'm the only judge of which rooms make it into the top 10, and they change order sometimes ... but I haven't had a new entry in a while just because these rooms were so memorable.

I'll start with number 10. This is March of 2006 in Anchorage Alaska. This is where I realized I needed a better camera for travelling as what I had just wouldn't capture what I was seeing.

In this room, the developers sat at desks facing out the windows. On one side was Knick Arm (I think it was Knick, and not Turnagin arm). In the distance was Mt. McKinley which was brilliantly visible while I was there, but my camera couldn't reach out far enough to capture. On the other side were the Chugatch Mountains. I had to work with the folks here for a week. I told them if I worked there all the time, I would get nothing done except staring out the window. Poor pictures, but great room:

Number 9 is room 550 from the Colorado Springs Marriott, in Colorado Springs, CO. This is my "Pike's Peak Room." I've been to this hotel several times, but this was the most memorable room from it. (Sorry for size. Hit Ctrl - (minus) to zoom out)

Number 8: In the lodge at Grand Teton National Park, in Wyoming. The windows here are huge, and the view of the Grand Teton range, and the wildlife between the window and the mountains was fantastic.

Yes! I really had to work here!

Number 7 is from the 24th floor of the Marriott Pinnacle in Vancouver, BC. Canada. My wife was with me on this trip, as she was on most of these trips. We've had several stays in this hotel

Number 6 is from a room on the 8th floor of the Marriott in Marina Del Rey, CA. I went there to visit a social networking site in Beverly Hills, but Beverly Hills isn't really my style. I've stayed there and ... meh ... So I decided to make a little longer drive every day and just stay in Marina Del Rey.

Number 5 is room 2365 of Marriott Marina in San Diego, CA. I had a week of work on this engagement, and obviously, my wife and son made the trip with me.

Again, size makes it so that you may need to ctrl - (minus) to zoom out. I apologize for inconvenience, but I save these full size, and don't want to store them twice. Please bear with me.

Oops ... got my reflection in the window ...
