Default drifting off topic

I am curious about the reasoning behind moderating topic drift. I can see if a thread was initiated by someone seeking help, that the topic should stay on topic so as to ensure the OP gets help. But if a thread starts as a general or philosophical discussion and drifts, what is the problem with the drift. Just curious about the thinking. Not super worried about it. Thank, oh fearless mods.

Depends upon the nature of the drift.

If the 'drift' is catalyzing the thread to the point of ambiguity or argument, then it will be moderated; either by way of edit, or the thread will be closed.

Ok. Argument like flinging logical fallacies and meanness I am thinking. That makes sense.

Or hypothetically talking about the benefit of Stride Rite shoes for kids for a page or two, and then have it turn into a 10 page discussion about which is better for long distance running, Nike or Asics?

The secondary topic may be absolutely valid, but not within the context of the original thread.

Odd as it may seem, the goal is to preserve context for individuals that come to the site looking for specific information, and obviously to assure that things remain relatively civil and addressing the subject at hand.

Right. That is what I mean. Why does it matter whether or not it is in the context of the original thread?

To the detriment, perhaps, of the free flow of conversation. I guess you get to determine the value that you wish to pursue.

What do you do during a tornado if you live in the bottom floor of an apartment complex?

Its been years, but my wife always said run out to the drainage ditch, while I figured stay inside with no windows - like a bathroom.

SQUIRREL!!!

There's a cereal that DOESN'T talk to you? I guess I need to see my doctor; ALL my food talks to me. LOL
