Default Regional Food

I really like to cook...and eat, and I like to taste food that is unique to a certain area of the country, or world even.
Is there any food that is unique to your area? Where I live a big favorite is spoonbread..it's a lot like corn souffle. And also burgoo, a beef stew.

I haven't had spoonbread since I was a kid! Gosh that brings back memories. So yummy with maple syrup on it! Southeast Michigan is such a melting pot, that we really don't have something that is "ours" (as far as I know). We eat Mexican, Italian, Chinese, Japanese, you name it!

I like to cook and one thing from Maryland that is great is Old Bay seasoning. It's used mostly for steamed blue crabs but we put it on popcorn, fries and other stuff. I like to include it in pasta dishes.

@WhiteRabbit Maryland also has Berger cookies. Wafer cookies with fudge on them. They go great with red wine.

I also come from hawaii and they have lots of local foods as we call them. I like crispy gauchi which is a stuffed wonton deep fried. Another is Poke, raw tuna coated with kukui nut oil with seaweed. This has become a rage in many fine restaruants recently though they may not call it poke and it is often done with different oils.

My wife and I really enjoy exploring local foods of places we visit. On our honeymoom we were in the carrabean and were introduced to tamarand. Twenty three years later it's available in our grocery store.

Ghetto dogs! mmmmm

Hot dog wrapped in bacon, grilled with bell peppers and jalapenos and onions in a poppyseed bun...oh and mustard. Mmmmm! Heartattack for sure! But you can only find them in the ghetto. There's a woman that sells them off a cart behind a market in South Central. lol We go about three times a year.

Everything else is a mix of food. It is Los Angeles, after all.

Poutine. Tim Hortons. Maple syrup. Those are all Canadian. I live in Alberta, and we have saskatoon berries and Alberta beef.

Poutine is great! We have a gastro pub near our house that serves it. I had been to Canada (British Columbia mostly) many times but didn't know about it until recently.

What's Runzas??

Being from what is effectively Cajun country I'm partial to crab boil myself, but I'll admit Old Bay does have it's place. Ghetto Dogs - Mmmmmmm. Lucky Dogs in New Orleans are the equivalent down here - great after you've been prowling the Quarter to all hours!!

To me steaming the crabs is better because the meat will cook more evenly and be more tender. When most people boil shellfish, crabs and the like they over cook them. Being from New Orleans probably decreases the risk of having it overcooked.

I do really like a coffee from Cafe DuMonde. What is it they put in it chickory?

Runzas are basically beef and cabbage inside of a yeast dough bread. The trick is getting just the right amount of pepper into the filling. It doesn't sound like anything special, but when they're made right they're to die for!

Most people absolutely kill seafood when they cook it. I read recipes all the time and just shake my head at some of the directions for cooking shrimp. There is nothing more rubbery than a shrimp that's been cooked to death - yuk!!

Yup - it's chickory. If memory serves it started being added as a filler during the depression and just kind of stuck. I can take or leave the CDM coffee personally but I always drink it black and very strong so it's about the same.
