Re: Where is the worst place you have ever slept?

In 1970, in a pancho, in Svay Rieng Province, (aka "Parrot's Beak") Cambodia. Was a Forward Observer in the jungle for 10 days at a time, calling in artillery. The troops nicknamed FOs "monkey eaters" because we could only haul out 7 days worth of c-rations and the rest of the time we ate....well you get the idea. At that, it was one step above the boys in green beanies--"the snake eaters." Worst 6 months of my life. I hope.

My other, even cheaper option was manga cafes. The photos show small pods, each with a seat and screen. Teenagers use them to watch various shows, such as manga cartoons, or porn. Rather than doors on the pods, the tenants store their stuff in baggage lockers and sleep lightly. I didn't stay in one, but if I had it would have probably been my worst place to sleep.
I've got a feeling it's tourists who are noisy... not the Japanese. My noisy neighbors weren't speaking English (or Japanese) but I considered politely requesting they keep it down. I played out scenarios in my head and figured it wasn't worth it. Traditionally the pods have not been available for women or tourists but intended for salary men.

This set up was similar to what you described. Communal lockers and showers, pods with screens instead of doors. It felt clean and safe. Without the noise I may have drifted but I'm a reasonably light sleeper. Still, it was an experience! The best part really was being up so early and exploring the streets. That wouldn't have happened otherwise.

Did you enjoy Japan?

Yes I enjoyed Japan. Not just a different country, it is a different world. Even the pigeons are clean!

I saw 1 person sleeping rough there. He had the worst place to sleep, a small alcove off an emergency exit. The alcove was built for the utility box above him. So he didn't have enough space to sleep horizontally and couldn't sit up without hitting the utility box. Yet he had a tidy little couple of bags with a clean umbrella wedged over it.

A web site I read said there are a few pod hotels that will cater for women and tourists, but only a few. Men and women have separate lifts and floors, no mixing allowed.

The snippet you just shared gives insight to the types of observations you make while traveling... and perhaps gives an insight to what speaks to you, too. Hence the 'like'.
