History based TV Series

I have been watching the series "Medici Masters of Florence" I really enjoy it. Over the years I have enjoyed many other series such as "the Tudors" and "Borgia" along with some others like "Rome". I have tried to get into "Versailles" but the story seems to drag. Does anyone else have any favorites?

Re: History based TV Series

The saxon chronicles, based on the Bernard Cornwell stories are good (My username Uhtred is from these).

If you can get past the insane gore, Spartacus was actually a quite good series, interesting plot and appeared to be reasonably accurate.

I Claudius is of course a classic, and still worth watching, just to enjoy the Livia character. Based on contemporary, but very unreliable sources.

The Borgias, from Showtime and not to be confused with Borgia from Netflix, was beautifully done. A few problems with the historical facts, but I imagine you get that a lot with historical dramas.

Vikings, from the History Channel, is very good.

"Six" is pretty good (History Channel). "Band of Brothers" and "The Pacific" are also great.

I love the "John Adams" miniseries on HBO.

Re: History based TV Series

Most of those suggested I have already watched.
@uhtred - have you ever watched "The Last Kingdom" it is about Uhtred son of Uhtred who was a Saxon noble kidnapped and raised by Danes (Vikings). It is based on the Cromwell books
@Rowan I watched the original "Borgias" which I thought was excellent. I can't seem to buy into the Showtime version. The Borgias were an original crime family. I have also watched all of the Vikings series.
@Xenote - Connections was and still is one of my all time favorites. I think I watched every episode and even many of Connections 2 when it came out
@tropicalbeachiwish I watched all of those shows as well. In fact my visit last year to New Orleans was to see the WW2 museum established by Stephen Ambrose who wrote the Band of Brothers. I have also read the books that the Pacific was based on.
All good suggestions that I would recommend to anybody
Barbarians was another interesting series. It chronicled that various tribes that took on Rome from Hannibal to the Visigoths

After watching some of them you have to wonder how Europeans actually developed any sort of the Ethnicity. None of these marauding armies were full of saints. You have imagine there was a lot of rape and interbreeding between the peoples that the blood lines would be very mingled over the course of History. But still there are stereotypical Italians, Germans, English, Spanish etc that exist.

Versailles has lots of porn in it. I don't watch it solely for that reason.

I second @uhtred 's suggestion of I, Claudius.

It's one of my favorite performances of Sir Derek Jacoby, along with Cadfael.

The Cadfael books by Ellis Peters are very good, if you prefer reading over TV. They only made a handful of TV episodes based in the series of books and they were not available in the US on DVD for a while, so I think they just recently re-released them.

Re: History based TV Series

Yes. that is the one I was talking about - the books were "the saxon tales", the TV series "the last kingdom" - the name of the first book. I'd forgotten

Re: History based TV Series

I've been binge watching the HBO show Deadwood, about the post Civil War gold rush/mining town. It's mostly fiction but the historic figures from that era are characters on the show. The show is about 12 years old now and most of the actors are recognizable and went on to other shows as well. Really enjoying it - great dialog.

My story: After a night on the town with him, wife exchanged inappropriate texts with her former boss.

Re: History based TV Series

Problem with many of history based series is that they are based on history but also add fictional material. We can see this in how real life characters like Billy the Kid and others are presented in various media. The problem is that those who produce these things need to attract an audience and much of life is boring. Then there is a large segment of the population who confuse based on a true story with the telling of the story being true. Yes there was once a person who did something but other than that, the story told is mostly fiction.

I used to read a lot of history books and travelled to 21 countries in my time. I loved to read about the history of all those countries and the important people throughout that history. Since no one writing today was not actually there and written history favors the victors and biased by the writers, it is difficult at times to know the truth. Still enjoyable but I take it all with a grain of salt.

Many prefer to drown in a pool of their own morality rather than seek the safety of a different morality.

My family loves American Ride. If high school history teachers had his passion maybe kids would actually enjoy history.
