Not to mention, sadly, fresh produce and healthier options are so much more expensive. I am not saying the situation is right. It is not. But We are not, nor should we be, the food police.
If the stuff about strip clubs and the rest is true, I think those things should be addressed right away. That's ridiculous.

I think it is meant that they remain poor so they can get that money, to spend on whatever they want. Tbh, some of them probably even work under the table just so they can continue getting cash benefits. And, I am sure some even manage to get money by allowing others to claim their children on tax returns... I am guessing this is one in that series mentioned in a previous post. It sucks. 🙁

BUT I am blow away at the 2 articles I just read about what food stamps can and can't buy.

https://www.google.com/amp/amp.daily...h-food-stamps/

10 Things You Can't Buy With Food Stamps | The Huffington Post

Here is the summary:

11 things you can buy with food stamps:
1. Taco Bell
2. Bail money
3. Lingerie
4. KFC
5. Shoes
6. Strip clubs
7. Lobster
8. Starbucks
9. Cash
10. K-cups
11. Cupcakes

10 things you CANT buy with food stamps:
1. Toilet paper
2. Laundry detergent
3. Toothpaste, toothbrush, floss
4. Soap
5. Diapers
6. Tampons and pads
7. Deodorant
8. Hair care products
9. Cleaning products
10. Lotion, powder, sunscreen

What the heck? Why is this ok??? We are setting up these people to be unhealthy and be hated by us but it's not their fault! It's the government.
I'm not sure that the list of can-buy is accurate:

SHARE New Mexico Resource Assistance

What can I buy with food assistance?
  • You can buy any food item except for food that is sold ready-to-eat, prepared like restaurant food.
  • You can buy seeds or plants that you will grow to produce food for your household.
  • You cannot buy things like liquor, cigarettes, vitamins or medicines, pet foods, soap, cosmetics, laundry products, or paper goods.
  • If you are elderly or disabled, you can use your food stamps to pay for approved home-delivered meals such as Meals on Wheels, or for meals at senior housing, lunch sites, or other group meals.
  • People in drug/alcohol treatment programs, homeless shelters, shelters for battered women, and certain other group living situations can use food stamps to pay for their meals.

I looked at Pennsylvania's, but I couldn't find anything more than what Ele posted. That's what I knew I could spend it on. Though, there was a small allowance for a convenience store, but it was small, like $15 or less in a month.

I could not buy anything prepared. I could not buy anything, but food. I didn't want to though. I couldn't afford not to use it all for food.

I looked into fast food places further. Yes, some states allow using EBT at a very limited number of fast food places. Why is that?

"Some states propose that hot meal are often difficult for elderly, disabled and homeless people to come by or to prepare themselves. Thus, many fast food chains can be approved and are allowed to accept the EBT cards for payment of cheap meals. In Michigan, the list of fast food chains includes, but is not limited to, Kentucky Fried Chicken, McDonald's and Subway. In Florida, two of the fast food chains where EBT card payment is accepted are Taco Bell and Pizza Hut. In Arizona, people can pay for cheap meals with EBT cards at restaurants that include Domino's and the Golden Corral. The list of restaurants that accept EBT cards is subject to change as more states choose to participate and more fast food chains choose to apply for authorization.

Although hot meals can be purchased with EBT cards at some fast food chains in select states, hot food purchased from grocery stores is not approved for EBT card purchase. People may not purchase food they intend to eat in the store of purchase with EBT cards."

Re: Government keeping poor people poor

You buy all that junk and you won't have enough to get through the month. That's crazy. I didn't buy that crap. I bought fresh fruit or fresh vegetables.

Can you use them for or at farmer's markets? That would be great! You could buy fresh produce in season from farmers in the area.

Re: Government keeping poor people poor

Actually, you can get a decent dinner at a grocery store. They have soups and salads, sandwiches and chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans and other veggies. Doesn't make sense. It's actually cheaper and you get more for your dollar.

I know from personal experience on the days I don't want to make dinner. Pretty good food, too.

I couldn't get them when I got those food stamps.

Much cheaper than Mickey D's or other restaurants.

And, it's just like homemade. One of the stores has an older lady reminds me of my grandma. She's a good cook, too.

Yep. This is a great option. And a person who does this, can then use their EBT to buy more things like meat, etc.

I grow most of my own veggies. It really keeps that cost of food down.

I think that where this comes from is that some people get both food assistance and cash assistance.

The cash is to help with things like paying rent, utilities, shoes (yes people need shoes), and other things that a person will need money for. Since sometimes people need to get cash out to pay for these things, they can get cash out.

There are machines, like ATM machines, where a person can withdraw some of their cash assistance to pay for things.

Some strip clubs were able to get those machines. And some people used withdrew their cash assistance for use in the strip club. From what I have read, the gov has been cracking down on this misuse.

Since people can get cash out (don't know how much), they can use that cash for anything to include bail money, strip clubs, etc. I'm not sure that there is a way to completely control this.

Here, an adult who earns under $1,400 a month can get about $180 a month in food assistance. So if the person earns zero( $0 ) they still only get $180 a month for food. In some cases they can get cash assistance.

It's not a lot of money.
