Thanks! It's a sore spot for me. Still blows my mind that drug companies can fund their own research. There is no moral responsibility.

@john117 I think you would appreciate it even though it's probably old news to you.

Re: Favorite ted talks?

I freaking love Ted Talks. My favorites in no particular order are

1. Madonna Badger's on grief.

2. Brene Brown's on the power of vulnerability.

Like John, I spent years working with big and virtual pharma and every size in between.

Typically new drugs are developed by small companies for which that drug is their only product. They are funded by investors that are betting the drug will work. The studies are conducted ethically with expert researchers under FDA guidelines. Very stringent.

However in most cases the drug doesn't work or is no better than the competition or it has negative side effects. Statistically that is the probable outcome. As a result the company ceases operating and all employees leave to work at other new companies. There is no one left to publish papers about negative research nor any funding left because the investors pulled out. I have seen this many times.

If the drug works, they sell the company or the license to big pharma like John's company and everyone involved makes millions.

Do you think that the ted talk gives an inaccurate description on how some research is done?

It seems like they want to get a certain result, so they create a research design to give them those desired results. Like testing new psych meds against really high doses of the old psych meds to show that the newer psych meds have less side effects. This is crazy to me.

All research should be independent. All information should be shared. And let the chips fall where they should. If your drug is best, it results will show. This ensures we are taking the best medication out there, and also makes the researchers and scientists step up their game and put out good quality products, because if they aren't good they won't be bought. Instead these companies fund their own research and basically pay people to create a research design that will make their product look good so it will sell, bringing them money, which they will then pay the researchers more. You scratch my back I'll scratch yours. No moral responsibility at all.

Re: Favorite ted talks?

I also just recently watched a Ted Talk called, "What young women believe about their own sexual pleasure." by Peggy Orenstein. As a card carrying feminist raising a young daughter, this one made me really sad.

It blows my mind too. Just look at the falsified Paxil study that claimed the antidepressant is safe for teens, when in fact it more than doubled the risk of suicide in young adults. The kicker? Over 2 million prescriptions were written for children and adolescents in 2012.

I agree- no moral responsibility.

And I am a huge fan of Seth Godin's Ted Talk titled "Stop Stealing Kids' Dreams." Talk about a brilliant mind.

I was just reading about that company! It's Glaxosmithkline. I'm familiar with their controversy involving their asthma medication salmeterol and their sketchiness involving their research.
They payed doctors to push their meds on patients, and withheld safety information regarding the drugs. It's insane that this is legal.

Re: Favorite ted talks?

My husband tries to defend this company saying that they have done so much good. And I'm sure they have. But it's hard for me to trust company's that are willing to do these things. It makes me question whether everything they produce is safe or not.
