Anybody here word on that little girl?

It's times like this that I just fall in love with Chesley B. Sullenberger, III even more. THAT is how a Captain acts!!!

Haven't heard anything on the girl. Heard 11 dead and 20 some missing.

Yeah, this guy acted totally opposite of Sully

I don't understand how this happened either? Captain said he thought he was far away from the shore...but he clearly wasn't.

Was he drunk? I am serious.. This story is nuts.

Jelly, story I heard on the news is that the ship just left port. Captain turned off computer navigation to deliberately steer the ship near shore to impress both passengers and captains friends on shore.

I heard that as well. I know nothing about boating but I know a thing or two about flying as both my parents had their pilots license. If they ever had to deviate from their flight path (whether intentional or forced) they would NEVER turn off their navigation system. Doing so it totally ridiculous and downright negligent.

Just heard the black box on CNN and boy oh boy is that guy a horrible leader. The Coast Guard told him to get back to his ship and they told him that people are dying to which he responded "How many?". That's when the Coast Guard went ballistic and screamed "It's your ship! YOU should know!!!!!".

I cannot imagine that drugs or alcohol weren't involved, I just cannot. A 22 year veteran who is THIS negligent and then refuses to go back to help? All I can say is I hope they have similar charges in Italy as they do in the States. 11 people are dead and countless others are missing. Nevermind the thousands of lives he put at risk and then abandoned without a care in the world. 11 manslaughter charges (potentially more) and 4,200+ reckless endangerment to human life charges, a host of maritime laws he broke and that guy wouldn't see the light of day here, ever.

Now I'm hearing that this isn't the first time he show boated the cruise ship close to the shore of this rocky coast. Also that the cruise line was aware of this...hello lawsuits

Thanks for the info. I guess his wanting to impress them didn't work. Sigh.

OMG!
Now Capt. Chicken Of The Sea is claiming he tripped when the ship was listing and fell into a life boat. He did not abandon ship before the passengers were evacuated!

As a Navy Navigation Specialist (in the past) I'll say this.

He didn't do this by himself. He ordered somebody to take that route.

He was outside established shipping lanes.

It is an area where radar and visual navigation rules would have been in effect, so "didn't know" won't fly.

I hope they hang him by his short hairs.

HAHAHAHA Tripped into the life boat.

That's pretty good aim. When I trip, I land on my face.

A really GOOD Italian captain was Captain Calamai of the Andrea Doria. Even after everyone was off the ship, he still refused to leave her-they had to drag him off.
