Default How long do kidney infections last?

Does someone have any experience with this?

I had a massive infection start in bladder/kidney at the same time(my kidneys are not seperated and I only have one kidney) 19 days ago. The pain started off with was the worst pain I ever felt, even worse then natural childbirth. I spent 5 nights in the hospital. I was put on leviquin(nasty stuff) and asked to come off due to the severe side effects. Yesterday was my last leviquin antibiotic I took(10 days). I have some Vantin(antibiotic) from the hospital that I'll take until it's gone.

My kidney pain is still horrible! It's slowly improving, but I can not handle the pain. I still have a low grade fever, which only broke in the hospital with the iv antibiotics. I also have an inflamed spleen, but that is on the other side of my body.

Does anyone know how long this lasts? This is my very first infection.

When I had a kidney infection my temperature was so high I was intermittently delusional. I still wasn't hospitalized! I don't feel like we can compare our experiences. If you have any doubts that you're healing appropriately, please call your doctor.

Are you on probiotics to counter the damage from the antibiotics? I drank a crap load of real cranberry juice and bought cranberry pills as well. I take a cranberry pill anytime I've done something that can lead to or worsen a UTI. That kidney infection was so painful and scary. I hope you're better soon!

I am under my doctors care. They are waiting a week to see if I improve. My kidney is not normal, so maybe that's why I'm not healing or they haven't found the right antibiotic. Who knows. It still hurts very badly.

When my gallbladder went out, it took 3 months of agony pain to figure it out. Kidney pain feels a lot like gallbladder pain. They took my gallbladder out and I was fine after that.

Go to the ER and/or call your doctor STAT.

There is no way TAMers are going to be able to tell you what is normal since your doc has your medical history.

My heart goes out to you. My mother recently had some kidney concerns and she was in massive pain at the hospital. Def call your doctor STAT & if the pain is unberable, get to the ER stat. Don't mess around w/ those things.

The doctor knows. They want to wait a week. I don't need the ER quite yet. I hope I don't have to go back. The hospital only did the urine/blood test, which a UTI. They said the kidney infection is secondary to the UTI.

I still feel crummy too. My fever is still low grade and hanging in there. I was just wondering if anyone else had a prolonged kidney infection. The ct scan showed no stones, but who knows? Maybe the scan was not accurate? It did show an inflammed bladder as well, but that has gotten better.

Oh, I'm drinking a TON of water with cranberry juice. I ordered tables, but they haven't come in the mail yet.

It's been three weeks and back to the doctor tomorrow. I'm so run down and the kidney pain is still very strong with the low grade fever. Hopefully the doctor can find the right antibiotic and I will ask for further testing. I pray I don't have permanent damage.

I'm so sorry to hear you are going through this; hope you have had pain meds for this.

Have you been drinking lots of cranberry juice? Are they sure that you do not also have a kindey stone?

I finally am feeling better! My fever broke about 4 days ago or so and my pain is lessening everyday. I'm taking amoxicillian which is actually working well, my fever broke after the second dose. Today the only time I feel the pain is when I lay on my right side or back, which puts pressure on my kidneys. I'm improving daily since the amoxicillian. It still hurts to drink diet mountain dew yet.

If I wasn't improving, I was going to ask for an IVP scan or kidney scan from my primary. I have a referral for a urologist, but this urologist has really bad ratings on ratemds. I did find one with better rating if I needed one. They wanted to also do a cyscospy, but since I'm better, I'm opting out.

Thanks for asking. I'm hoping to be back up biking next week.

I'm almost 100% positive I got this infection from a new lube. It was a warming lube by Melt. I threw it away, but I can't remember the name. Hubby kept caking it on.lol. It felt great, but it sure had its consequences. 3 days later the bladder infection came on very quickly(4:30pm) and reached my kidneys by 7pm. Since I have a horseshoe kidney(one big kidney that's grown together), my urine backwashes in my kidneys, which lead to this infection. The IV antibiotics worked the best. We tried others, but it's the good ol amoxicillian that is working now.

That lube had a lot of ingredients. We are sticking to the KY brand from now on.

It's good to have you up early and posting again.
I know your husband is taking care of you, plus those great children of yours are helping out too.

Best wishes
Thank you Dean.

I'm glad everything is returning back to normal. As soon as the kidney pain is gone, I'll be back on my stationary bike. Since I have the spine injury in my neck, makes it difficult to walk very far. The biking really helps me walk a little easier. I'm back to my normal routine as far as the cooking and cleaning goes, which my family is grateful for! I do cook/make 95% our food from scratch.

I'm very lucky to have my husband! He really has gone out of his way this time to make sure I'm alright. He's full of kisses too, which I love! My girls are awesome too! They have had a very busy weekend with their friends. Somehow the neighborhood kids all end up at my house.lol. They can get pretty crazy when they are having fun.

I spoke too soon. I took a few steps back. I saw the urologist yesterday and on Wednsay they will take a camera and look in my bladder. They will also inject a dye into my kidneys to make sure they are functioning right and that there are no stones the CT missed.

I'm very worn out and the flank/adominal pain is still severe with a few other symptoms. We'll find out Wednsday if it's my kidneys causing the pain or not. I also have an inflammed spleen and my bloodwork is a bit off.
