I'm sorry too, DanF. I'm sorry that you are oblivious to the struggles of those who are not well heeled; looks like your world is very small.
I'm not interested in discussing our careers or ages. You have the temerity to assume that everyone has a backyard big enough for both a whirlpool and hot tub. Therefore, I have nothing to talk about with someone who believes that only wealthy people exist in the world. We cannot possibly relate to each other.
My husband's family lives in a province where houses are very cheap. Some of those people look down on us for renting an apartment, but they are also country bumpkins who have never left their tiny villages. If houses cost an average of $175,000 here, we would be able to buy just like them. However, homes where we reside cost more than double the aforementioned figure.
You know what? I have resigned myself to the sad fact that we will never own. My husband is worth ten mansions. It is very presumptious of you to tell me that "it can happen" for us as well; you know nothing about our situation!
I didn't intend to make you mad, but since you think I am living in such a small world, I will respond to your post.
My question of age and career had a reason.
I was married in my early 20's, had a baby, and ate a lot of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches while I lived in an apartment and struggled to pay bills.
So get off your pity party.
I have worked my ass off for over 30 years. I don't have a mansion, I have a small house in a corner lot in NW Florida.
I have a measly associate degree, but it's all I need in my field.
I've been where you are. I just didn't settle for it. I'm not rich, either. I am comfortable and live within my means, which are pretty simple for the most part.
In a nutshell, your life is what you make of it. Enjoy.
I LOVE the claw footed tubs as well! I was unaware they would cost so much......*sigh* Posted via Mobile Device
That's on the low end too And that's with us doing on the leg work to get it pretty again! Craigslist has them for around here for about $100, but they show these beautiful tubs sitting in mud, with sticks and rust all over them.... Those need reglazing and at a pretty penny
we will love our balcony with the beautiful view of our city's skyline.
The only reason we ended up with a house is because of a grant to help with our very small down payment, back when there were programs like that. Our house payment ended up being less than our rent payment on our one bedroom appt. Of course the one bdrm was in a affluent area - one we couldn't even think of buying a house in (houses here upwards of 300K and much more in many cases - ask 2nd time iz best!).
The house we bought was a little reject It had been a former meth home on the quarantine list, the list price had been cut in half from the sell price 2 years prior because no one wanted the little house. The best thing about our former meth home, they spent over 10K cleaning the home up, this included flushing pipes, scrubbing drywall, getting every piece of dirt ever built up in that house. It was spotless when we first saw it. We had the air checked at one point, and it's safe to live in and we got it for about 50K less than what it was worth... All because it had been quarantined and it had a bad reputation in the neighborhood. We've cleaned up the reputation for the house though, but anytime we talk to a neighbor, they mention the history of the home... We know, we know, meth heads lived here before and the cops did a huge bust here We're good now.
Otherwise we'd still be renting. We lucked out in getting our home and to get in it, we didn't spend more than $1300 (that wouldn't happen today though). If someone had asked me 5 years ago where I'd be today, no way in heck I'd have said "owning" a home.

I like the claw tubs, too.
just curious, how much is reglazing or whatever it takes to restore one?
The only reason we ended up with a house is because of a grant to help with our very small down payment, back when there were programs like that. When was this?? Our govt had a similar program years ago for families in dangerous ghettos. Our house payment ended up being less than our rent payment on our one bedroom appt. Wow. This could never happen to us, not if we want to stay in the city. It is not practical for us to move to the suburbs; there are less jobs available and my college is downtown. So no home for us. Of course the one bdrm was in a affluent area - one we couldn't even think of buying a house in (houses here upwards of 300K and much more in many cases - ask 2nd time iz best!).

I am very happy for you. Despite the fact that I have been accused of "settling", I know that trying to earn credentials for a career (instead of a job) is nothing short of ambitious. However, no matter what I earn, it will never be enough to own property. I truly married for love; my husband lost his job while we were engaged and I stayed with him even though people were telling me to leave.
Wait a second. Did you just post a private message?
If you did that's f'd up squared and you should be banned.
You both are being stupid.
I deleted the pm post, but thank you for quoting it Trenton.
My brother is an attorney. He lives in an expensive condo, drives a luxury car and has more money than he can spend.
He is also 42 and unhappily single and childless.
I guess my brother is more "successful" since he owns a home right?
How someone can call himself mature and then continue a long forgotten argument is beyond me.
None of the rich men I dated while I was single can hold a candle to my husband. They were all entitled bastards with fast cars to compensate for their small packages.
Wait. Did I just post a post of a private message? I'm stupid and should be banned. lol
OK. All better now.
Yea. I don't know what that was all about but...wow.
FirstYear, never say never! I thought we'd NEVER be able to afford anything in Southern California. But...we did
However, it's really not a big deal...owning or not. At this point, we can't write off SO MUCH about the house, it's hardly a benefit. Except, we can paint the inside

Anytime FYD
DanF was not trying to define you or your success level. He was trying to relate to you and offer you some common hope. Maybe you should stop wearing panties so they don't get in a bunch so much.
I rent and I'm 37. Wow. Call the police. Who cares? We all have our different backgrounds, aspirations and goals. No idea why you got so offended. I really don't and DanF doesn't deserve to be made to feel like a douche for trying to offer you some old fashioned friendly advice.
Yeah, I thought it was pretty sad too. It is pretty entertaining when people play the "I'm older, I'm smarter" card, yet they act like sniveling 12 year olds. *yawn*
I will agree that life has given me some pleasant surprises. Both of us always said we would never get married and we found each other.
Neither of us like the suburbs and I only like to visit the country for vacations. So renting it is unless we get tired of the city life.

Lawd, onnu can bodda people eee? Jeeesus!
Sorry, my west indian is coming out.
I am so done with this subject, Trent. This dead horse has been beaten beyond recognition. I stopped hitting it, but DanF's private message was a 2X4 still bludgeoning the horsey.
If you saw the message he sent me, you would change your tune pretty quickly: "You are obviously not successful yet!"
Not mad at you at all; you know I think you are aces. Just trying to show you that there is more than meets the eye.
