Re: whats for drink
Since this seems to be the place where people know about drinks ...
I've been thinking and scheming about what to do next. I wanted to see if I could add a twist to the dry cider. My thought was to get a half gallon of the RW Knudson "Just Cranberry" juice from Whole Foods and substitute that for a half gallon of the apple must to make a cranberry cider. That has almost no sugar in it, so I'll have to add some more sugar to get the alcohol where it needs to be - I usually target 8% ABV for the cider - it ages well at that %. I think the cranberry juice should add quite a bite to the cider.
For added fermentables, on the normal cider recipe, I add a little brown sugar to bump the ABV from ~6% to ~8%. The molasses in the brown sugar adds a little bit of taste, but the main reason I liked that was that it gave it a darker color. If I added the cranberry, I'm thinking I need to use dextrose or table sugar for the added fermentable so that it wouldn't darken the apple juice, and the red would show up more in the final product.
I'm just thinking out loud at the moment, and I'd like someone to help my idea, so: Have you ever had a (dry) cranberry cider? If so, what did you think of the color and the amount of cranberry bite it had?
I'm sure I'll experiment, and it will be a 5 gallon experiment ... the problem is when it turns out good, I share it and when it turns out not so good, I have to drink it myself ...

#%$@ TAM!!! It was a rooster long before it was an organ!!! FREE THE **** FROM THE EVIL TAM CENSORS!
Never had cranberry cider, I enjoy the strongbow, especially with some Nice dark stout floating on top (Crown float), not sure how any beer recipes would taste with cranberry though...
not sure about cranberry cider, aren't cranberries a bit tart? that might taste disgusting!! but I feel you should be a guinea pig shy guy
and try it out
If you're looking for something to add color, how about dark cherries? They would also have their own sugar, right? We have a local dark cherry hard cider here that I love. It's not dry though. I don't know if you're looking more for color or for dryness. You will probably have access to tons of dark cherries in a few months, if you're within sight of Mt. Rainier.
martinis with vodka are....vodka martinis LOL!
if you win the 'last person to post in this thread' prize I'll take you to a martini bar rather than the champagne bar and see how p*ssed I can get you
