I think this is the second time this has come up in this thread...

I've spent all of my life in, on, and around the water so here goes. Think about old three masted sailing ships - "tall ships" Think about the three mast - then picture the horizontal pieces on each mast that are perpendicular to the mast - the pieces the sails actually hang from - those are yard arms. I could really impress you with my nautical speak and tell you that the fore mast will usually have three, the main mast will usually have four and the mizzen (back) mast will usually have two - and a "spanker" (I kid you not), but that is certainly subject to the the configuration of each particular ship.

So the saying comes from when the sun falls below the lowest yard arm on the main mast signaling the end of the day and time for drinks!!! Of course since there are three yard arms higher on the mast you can say the sun has gone over the yard arm virtually any time of day.

This concludes this episode of: "This Old Boat." Please tune in next week.

I think it's time to pop a cork on another bottle of homemade blackberry wine.

Oh! That sounds yummy! My grandpa used to make wine. He did an elderberry that everybody loved. And he did a potato-pineapple wine. Sounds disgusting, but of course he needed the potatoes for the starch. It was very bubbly, as I remember. My mom used it when she made ham. Awesome!

Yes. Pinot Noir preferably. I avoided Pinot for the longest time and it was actually a Pinot from Portland that converted me. Then I delved into a few from WA and now I enjoy Pinot from regions close to home.

But I'll pretty much drink any type of red. I like dry whites on occasion.

Hubs doesn't drink wine so it's rare that I'll drink at home. I usually share a bottle with girlfriends or if my dad is visiting he'll ensure we share some bottles of Pinot together.

I'm a green tea addict though.

We are hosting a celebrity cultural/dance group from my wife's country in our house this evening. (I'll tell who after the event if anyone is really interested.) They've been brought here to put on two performances in the Seattle area this weekend.

My wife has quite the feast she's putting the finishing touches on. I've put quite a bit of my homemade cider and blackberry wine in to chill. If I know these folks (Tradition, that is), they'll probably bring beer and soju as well. I don't think any of them will be dancing by the time they leave our house this evening ... and by their tradition, nobody will pour their own drink - it's traditional courtesy for each person to pour the drink for others and allow someone else to pour his/her drink.

I'm going to help put the finishing touches on preparation. Cheers, everyone, or as we'll be saying it: Gombei! Dupshida!

Having a Mocha Frappe from McD's. One of my guilty pleasures.

We had so much fun tonight ... I should probably wait until the effects of the wine has worn off before I try to tell about it. For not, I'll just say:

They liked my blackberry wine more than the 5 year old Bordeaux we bought from the store .

Everyone liked my cider more than the beer they brought (as evidence, I can present the number of bottles of each that was emptied ).

They gave a private performance for us, but since it is raining tonight, and we don't have enough room in the house for the ribbon, the Korean Hat Dance was not part of it.

We danced all through the house ... even on the beds. I have evidence in the form of video (which will likely never be posted here): My wife also danced on the bed in the guest room - my son and I danced on his bed.

They included all of us after a while, so we played the ggang-ka-ri (AKA Sang-soi - a small hand-held gong or cymbal), the janggo (aka Janggu) the buk, and the hand-held veriosn of the jing. I'll link to those when I can actually search for them to link to them.

We danced to the percussions whether it was the professionals playing, or people like me ... and we loved it - there are videos of me dancing (which likewise will probably never find their way here ).

I said I like parties where people forget about what is cool, and just do what is fun. This was such a party ... nobody cared what was cool. I miss the culture I grew up in, but it's just not there anymore. I'm jealous and happy at the same time that my wife's culture is still there like this ... it was such a frekkin good time!!

It also doesn't suck that when the party is over, everybody hits the dining room and kitchen, and when they leave the house, it is clean.

That's all I can write about it tonight. They left me with a lot of empty bottles that I'll just have to refill - I'll get started on that next week. And more importantly, they left my wife and me with great memories of a great evening that we'll tell as stories to people in years to come ... these once-in-a-lifetime opportunities come alone about every 2 - 3 weeks IMO ... What a night!!! I'm loving it ... and thinking about how HOT that lady of mine looks when she's dancing on the bed ... I gotta get another dance ...

Goodnight all!

EDIT: I apologize to those of you on the introvert thread ... I don't think I was an introvert tonight ... and I don't think I will be the next time we have an event like that .

I tried the new Texas vodka last week, "Deep Eddy" ice tea. Split the bottle with homegirl and a few older friends at a BBQ.

Never again!

Vodka gets me too randy and a few drinks later I'm three sheets into the wind only to black out and forget who I'm kissing and what her name was.
