First of all: Define how we are sleeping when we are on the left or the right. Are we lying on our backs? on our stomachs? Standing at the foot of the bed? or looking from the head of the bed. Perspective is going to be the beginning of this ... and on the "sleeping on the stomach" part, I've just recently been able to determine that I always wake up with a headache if I sleep too long because I sleep on my stomach (which makes me twist my neck when I turn my head to the side ... thus if I sleep too long, I wake up with a headache).
If you think of the position we are in when we are lying on our backs, then at home, currently, I sleep on the left, but this changed with our last move. At our last address, I slept on the right when we were both on our backs.
When we travel together, I think it has to do with our purpose. If I am working, I usually sleep next to the phone whichever side it is on so I can easily answer the wakeup call without having to climb over my wife to get to the phone ... she doesn't usually want to answer the wakeup call (And if you don't answer it, Marriott will send security to your room to make sure you're okay - quite nice I think.) If we're travelling just for pleasure, then maybe I sleep next to the phone out of habit, but not always. I think it depends on who wants to watch TV, or who thinks they'll want to get to the bathroom first. It's really not consistent.

We used to have a big Siamese cat who would jump up on the bed, curl up at my feet and purr happily. I told my wife that I was going to have the cat train her to do that ... she let me know my attempts at such training were not going to work ...

For clarification... I meant from the perspective of when you first get into bed and are lying on your back. I sleep on the left side. Even if I roll onto my stomach later, I still consider me being to the left of her (left side of the bed). Although if someone walked into the room and stood at the foot of the bed, they would say I was on the right. Hope this helps.

I think I covered all possibilities when I answered, though.

Smith & Wesson makes other things than guns. I keep a S &W telescoping baton under my bed on my side, and always sleep on the side facing the door. In our current home, that puts me on her left side. Never had a break-in while we were home, but we had a couple of break-ins in our last home during the day. Being attacked at night is probably one of my wife's biggest fears, so the baton is more of a purchase to help calm any fears.
we were broken into while we were in bed - about 1am, noises downstairs, he thought it was the cats and shouted at them, heard feet legging it out out the door
then took a big kitchen knife and went driving around the neighbourhood looking for him
Yep, hubs on the left and me on the right. We've been married so long that I can't remember our initial reason for this. Whenever we go to a hotel, he insists on keeping this pattern. It doesn't matter to me as long as he is there.

And you're still defending the castle with swords? Well, small castle, so small swords now ...
