Hello my dears. I have been doing tons of research on weight loss, exercise, the whole bit. I came across something that spoke to me, something I without knowing it, FASTING.
I know many people who fast due to religion. I have had to fast before a full physical exam. This isn't rocket science, but the idea is to fast 14-18 hours every other day to allow your body to tap into its fat reserves instead of constantly being fed food.
I bought a few books on the subject, but haven't had a chance to read them. I was wondering if any of you use fasting to lose weight, what you think of it, and if you succeeded or failed.
i have heard that you gain the weight back fast and possibly even more because youre body thinks you are starving it so it will store even more fat to be ready for the next time.
i dont know for sure though.
hmmm don't really believe in fasting - eat little and often, and be active
if you have zero willpower what will end up happening is that you'll fast and think you can afford loads of calories and then eat a packet of donuts...

Why are you asking these knuckleheads?
Half of the people here concerned with "fitness" are still stuck on the same low carb theories that have since been disproven time and time again, and think P90X and any other POS workout device is going to get them fast results. And oh yeah, almost everybody will try to sell you on some crap supplement you never needed in the first place. These are not bad people mind you..... just misinformed by marketing claims and don't know any better.
You want answers Endlessgrief? Go ask them in a bodybuilding forum for a more potent information and experiences or feel free to pm me - 'cause "I have a hard on natural bodybuilding!". Seriously, you name it and I have either done it, or heard of it, or know someone doing it right now. But I'll let you know "Intermittent Fasting" goes against a lot of people's beliefs so they bash it insted of trying it for themselves. You won't find many who do it and the rest will tell you, "you're crazy.".
I've been fasting throughout most of the day for nearly three and a half months now, and lifting weights in the evenings four nights a week. I'm stronger on days I go completely fasted and my thinking is much sharper when I don't have to slow everything down with digestion. If I feel more tired than usual I know it's time to break the fast (breakfast - get it!) with something that is mostly protein and less than 20g of carbs or so..... like a vanilla greek yogurt, protein shake, berry gatorade post workout bottle.
It has to be liquid with me because I can't digest meat before the gym, and it has to be protein because you'll eat more carbs than you can handle before you know it and tax your system. After that I back to normal and feel just as strong and refreshed as I would with a giant coffee. And I still make room for a donut once in a while when I can tollerate the sugars.... have to have something sweet after I workout along with my protein shake like a Lil Debbie or Twinkie to keep me from cheating on my diet.
That's right! I fast and workout on an empty stomach, if I want a donut I will eat a donut, I don't do cardio other than walking 2-3 mi, I eat an entire chicken every day... and I'm bigger, stronger, leaner, and faster because of it.
My wife struggles recently with an eating addiction. The day on, day off approach to fasting was a measure she tried, but her therapist recommended that she avoid this. The key, and I've always preached this to her, is that you have to learn balance on the days that you do eat, even if you do fast, before you begin to make the right changes that can be sustained long term.
I was into a bodybuilding lifestyle before I met my wife. I've worked out for three decades, still. Because I have a minor, rare cellular metabolic disease (a muscle disease), I've always tried to pay close attention to what works and what doesn't. So much of what our bestsellers teach us is based on some pretty bad assumptions, in my opinion.
What she has done that I believe to be healthier is using fasting about a day a week. Although I converted to my wife's faith before our marriage, we are pretty unique in our belief, I would say, because I'm still pretty dependent upon the spiritual vision of the native american tribe where I lived through part of my childhood. My wife accepted these, so her fasting is more of a spiritual cleansing. My wife says that this fasting day reminds her that her body and spirit don't require as much as people think, and can get by on much less than we begin to think if we eat like others. Because of the cellular muscle disease, I cannot fast because my cells don't utilize glycogen efficently. I eat very small portions throughout the day.
Fasting is actually a healthy and sane way to lose or maintain weight. The "starvation mode" myth is false as long as you're getting enough calories throughout the week. (Don't try to diet or eat low-calorie when you're not fasting.) The fast is the diet. I suggest checking out Brad Pilon's excellent book Eat-Stop-Eat for the best science on fasting.

Nsweet, I never go into things lightly and without researching the hell out of things. I do not want to make someone rich by buying suplements where in the commercials, the models are about 20 and say "I lost 40 pounds on (insert name of bullsh!t product here).
In the book I just bought, everything you said was mentioned in the book. I also know some men into fitness and they fast as well before working out to burn stores of fat. Also, these fasts are not long in duration and and only done a couple times a week.
Think about it, I have heard you will get better results if you work out BEFORE BREAKFAST in the morning on an empty stomach.
How often do you do cardio and what kind of cardio do you do and what is the duration? How many times a week do you fast?
When you said you eat a whole chicken a day, is it boiled? I had many bodybuilder friends when I used to go to the gym and they all had boiled chicken in clear bags for their lunch. It didn't look very appetizing. They also suggest eating oatmeal, but I cannot eat oatmeal because the texture and the look of it is like I am eating something someone already ate, puked it up, and gave me their puke bowl.

From the research I have been doing, they do not recommend that you fast more than 3 times a week. One day without food will not kill you. I am not the type to go "overboard" on things. I have never in my life had to diet. I thought I had great genetics until I hit my 40's. What a surprise!!!!!!
Fasting, body building, pills, small meals, more activity... hmmm... so many options to choose from.... I prefer... a healthy balanced diet of three meals a day, some snacks between such as an apple or celery and peanut butter.... and something like yoga, taebo, walking, swimming, sexcersize, or something not to stressful.... I used to be able to do more extreme excersizes but since having kids and due to other past problems... I'm a bit limited in what i can do. That and i hate the idea of taking pills... I'm not against things like slim fast or special k bars every now and again though. As far as fasting... i couldn't do it... I enjoy food to much and making said food.. lol.
