I really enjoy my food, and can be put off so easily. I can't eat if I'm sitting in a restaurant and it's dirty. Things stuck on the tables. Bugs on the floor.
And I know it's a bit mean to say it, but my first job when I was 14 was in a nursing home serving food. If I have to eat next to a really old couple, who are drooling or eating with their mouths open...I can't do it. It really puts me off.
And yes I agree with the above, if I'm mad I can't eat. Or stressed. Even if I was starving before, my appetite goes right out the window.
I don't know how I forgot this when I responded before...
Sometimes I can't eat meat if I'm the one who cooks it. Especially chicken, for some reason. I was a vegetarian for several years, and had to reintroduce meat into my diet very slowly. Chicken was the last thing I reintroduced, which is strange, considering it was my favorite in pre-vegetarian days.
But yeah, I either have to get someone else to handle it raw and cook it or I won't eat much or any of it.
Stress is the one surefire way to kill my appetite, especially relationship stress. I can look at the most disgusting things and not be affected, (I'd probably make a great mortician).
But stress me out long enough and I'll go anorexic. Posted via Mobile Device

Re: Things that ruin your appetite
I don't think there's very much that makes me lose my appetite. I grew up as a farm boy ... and we also hunted for quite a bit of our food since we were WAY the heck back in the sticks. I can hunt it, kill it, skin it, gut it, then rinse my hands off, cook it and eat it. I could clean the cow lot, shovel chicken **** out of the chicken house, then come in and eat. I washed the crap off the eggs and ate them - usually cooked, but I went through the fad of raw eggs in the late 70's. I've even had times when I've been elbow deep helping a cow who was in trouble having a calf, then when the job was done, it was time to eat. And of course, there were times when we killed and cooked farm animals to eat, and I was always in on that job.
I've eaten Army C-rations, eaten food from several countries, eaten raw seafood, dried anchovies, raw beef, ... I haven't done the raw buffalo liver, but I could if I had the chance. I've eaten fermented skate, strong smelling fermented soy and other foods, dried ferns, silkworm pupae, and even live grasshoppers in military survival training. In Korea, I was able to eat the squid that they pop on the table and chop up where the tentacles go squirming across the table ... the suckers will stick to your tongue and cheek, but it didn't keep me from eating it.
Probably the hardest thing to stomach that I can remember was the dehydrated salisbury steak when the military first moved from C-rations to MREs.
I love watching Anthony Bourdain, and the strange things he eats (even the beating cobra heart) doesn't bother me.
There's been only one thing that I can remember making me lose my appetite and that is a med that I've had to take. It just killed any semblance of an appetite. I had no sensation of hunger so I didn't know when to eat or how much to eat when taking it. That's been the only thing I've encountered that's really bothered me.

#%$@ TAM!!! It was a rooster long before it was an organ!!! FREE THE **** FROM THE EVIL TAM CENSORS!
"I can't bear gristle of any kind (no jokes about throbbing gristle please ladies )"
It's like......she read my mind.
Roaches or any mention of them.
Any kind of nasty talk...poop, insects, boogers, farting...ICK. My kids try it and they are excused from the table. It's only allowed during dessert.
The Duggars, Kardashions or Flava Flav on the TV.
Douche, tampon and feminine itch cream commercials.
The Andy Griffith show.
I must admit that seeing Flava Flav saying YEEEEAAAHHH BOOOOOOY makes me want to retch. He's about the size of a fly, I bet if I hit him with my new fly swatter, that little f*cker will be t!ts up!
When I was in high school, I came home, and of course, needed feed... Teenage boy, ya know?
So, I made a sandwich.... bread, cheese, big stack of lunch meat.... Took one bite, and as I was chewing, I looked down at my sandwich, and a maggot crawled out from between the slices of meat. I DO NOT eat lunch meat any more!
I would need counseling after that.
What is worse than biting into an apple and finding a worm inside?
I can not eat anything that requires chewing and think about sex at the same time. Seriously, it's like there is no blood left for digestion when I see something erotic, and the effect last longer than the desire does. So like if the waitress is phishing for compliments and tips with her fake C-cups and too tight shirt.... I have to focus on my meal and ask her for more water with the reflection from the napkin dispenser like she's Medusa, or else her bust will turn me hard as stone and I can't taste my food.
One trouser tent is all it takes to turn an innocent hamburger order into the beginning of a cheesy pono in my mind complete with bow chica wow wow music and that airbrushed hazy blur. "Would you like some 'pie' to go with that?" takes a completely different meaning and sounds sexier than in reality. From then on it's either time for TUMS and a good twenty min before I can eat again or "GO TIME!".

FINDING 1/2 A WORM ewwwwww
I will spare everyone the roach stories from a place I worked...... Well, maybe one- roaches do not die if they are inside a microwave and you turn it on. They just run around until they fall into your hot food and THAT finally kills them.... I couldn't eat or drink anything at that place if I set it down or looked away from it for more than a few seconds!

MOUTH NOISES! ugh! I refuse to look at other people eating and usually stare at my plate, hide with my food, or watch tv, because the way people eat disgusts me. But the SOUND of their disgusting eating habits ends up ruining my meal, every time.
I actually cannot watch one of my brothers drink, because it grosses me out the way he developed his drinking function, and left over liquid on someones face from a drink..
It's not mean. you can't help it. I have a hard time eating around mentally handicapped, I don't hate them, I'm not prejudice against them, the eating habits just upset my brain, its not like they can help it either, much like the elderly.
