Default Awesome word-smithing

Not mine ... something I'm jealous of ... In several pieces I've written, I've tried to capture being overtaken by sleep, or fighting hard against it until sleep wins the battle. But I've never captured the peaceful passing from consciousness to sleep so beautifully as the lyrics to this song. I'm in absolute awe of this every time I read it or hear it ... I wish I'd written that ... such beautiful, peaceful poetry.

Long awaited darkness falls
Casting shadows on the walls
In the twilight hour I am alone
Sitting near the fireplace, dying embers warm my face
In this peaceful solitude
All the outside world subdued
Everything comes back to me again
In the gloom
Like an angel passing through my room

Half awake and half in dreams
Seeing long forgotten scenes
So the present runs into the past
Now and then become entwined, playing games within my mind
Like the embers as they die
Love was one prolonged good-bye
And it all comes back to me tonight
In the gloom
Like an angel passing through my room

I close my eyes
And my twilight images go by
All too soon
Like an angel passing through my room

And the voice that best captures the mood of they lyrics IMO.

Truly beautiful and angelic... Thanks for sharing, SG.

Here's another song which I think captures that magical space between wakefulness and sleep.

By day give thanks, by night beware
Half the world in sweetness, the other in fear

When the darkness takes you, with her hand across your face
Don't give in too quickly, find the things she's erased

Find the line, find the shape through the grain
Find the outline and things will tell you their name

The table, the guitar, the empty glass
All will blend together when the daylight has passed

Find the line, find the shape through the grain
Find the outline and things will tell you their name

Now I watch you falling into sleep
Watch your fist uncurl against the sheet
Watch your lips fall open and your eyes dim
In blind faith

I would shelter you
And keep you in light
But I can only teach you
Night vision

Night vision - Suzanne Vega

Anything by Neil Peart or Roger Waters.

I am envious of Ani Difranco's lyrical ability.
Although this isn't about the half sleep, I love how she captures this late night scenario.

two-thirty in the morning
and my gas tank will be empty soon
neon sign on the horizon
rubbing elbows with the moon
a safe haven of sleepless
where the deep fryer's always on
radio is counting down
the top 20 country songs
and out on the porch the fly strip is
waving like a flag in the wind
y'know, i don't look forward
to seeing you again soon
you'll look like a photograph of yourself
taken from far far away
and i won't know what to do
and i won't know what to say
