Default Is everyone fat???

Why is everyone FAT?

My wife and I have been moving out BMI's toward the healthier side of normal. She needs her third new wardrobe now, and stuff that now claims to be XS would have been considered S or M just 15 years ago.

Are the clothing companies adjusting sizes to obesity?

Other examples of overfatness:
  1. Try finding a Size 0 or 00 in womens these days, some department stores have stopped carrying them
  2. Try finding "slim fit" mens shirts that do not puff out of your beltline with extra fabric!
  3. Try finding food to eat when you travel, if I had a dollar for every overpriced olive plate that I have been forced to buy at airport Vino Volo's...
  4. Try finding jeans that don't look like parachute pants for your 7 year old daughter who snacks on *god forbid* fruit and vegetables instead of pop, chips or fruit juice (pure sugar).
  5. Try finding winterwear that isn't marshmallow mannish for under 300 bucks a piece. Outfitting my kids for the snow this year cost a FORTUNE at a ski shop.
  6. Try finding anything healthy in a grocery store. If they took all the processed food out they would be a quarter the size (and so would their patrons)
  7. Even all of the kids at the bus stop are overweight. We live in a small neighborhod and we NEVER see some of the kids outside.

Last summer I watched my diabetic uncle in law who saps off of his kids and the govt fall through a wooden deck at our lake place.

This was after he ate 5 sloppy joes with potato chips. The bastard weighs over 300 pounds and has legs the size of tree trunks which I am sure will soon be surgically removed (at least he wont fall through man made stuctures anymore).

I even read newspaper articles about overweight people asking for special disabilty rights. The last time I checked, you did not have a right to have the rest of the country cover your medical bills while you eat yourself slowly to the grave packed with coumadin and insulin. ARGHH

For the love of our health fellow americans, is it that hard to eat fruits, vegetables, lean protein, and whole grains?

You don't even need to excercise, just sit around watching TV for all I care, you just need to EAT RIGHT!!!

So I gather from this chart that if you live in the south and not on the Atlantic coast (no apparently Gulf doesn't count), then you're more likely to be fat... oh and then there's Michigan.

Yeah you could definitely get into the demographics of the map. For instance I live in MI now but grew up in the MN area. in MN you have scandanavians, in WI its a mix of scandanavian and germanic. In michigan its more of a melting pot tending toward dutch and pollocks.

Michigan is very bad in an economic sense, and there have been many studies that suggest walmarts product placement and marketing will make you fat, so I dunno.

I should have put this in politics or something. People come in all shapes and sizes, but obesity is not a size.

you sound bitter.

Perhaps you should retire to a small cabin in a remote corner of Montana (a yellow state). That way, you might have fewer resons to get into an indignant rant?

'try finding anything heathy in a grocery store...'

Yeah.. OK. I seem to find plenty.

You can buy a McDouble for a dollar - but a salad costs about $5...

programme was on here the other day that went over to the US to meet this guy that made giant (and I mean GIANT coffins)

he said that 15 years ago he made a few a year - now he's making 20 A MONTH

youngest person he made one for? 11 years old

I'm not judging - we're catching up fast

Then why can't I find clothes cut for average people? My wife is skin and bones but I am right about average, and even I cannot find dress clothes, it's starting to drive me nuts.

Wifey is 5'1 110LB and I am 6'2 200LB, Daughter is 4' 45LB. I have shopped everywhere from old navy to Macy's and the only stuff I can find that fits properly is like 100+ bucks an item. (BXBG)

I am to the point where I am having clothes made for work. And I am the fattest of the 3 of us.

Yeah I work for a US company with 200+ global offices. Meeting my colleagues from other countries made me lose my college weight quickly, but that was 10 years ago, and some first world nations are doing their damnedest to catch up.

@Anotherguy: I am bitter, but I am not trying to judge people or anything. I just feel there is an undercurrent in politics, industry, and public opinion that instead of trying to fix this major public health issue we should just adjust everything to it. More research on blood thinners and diabetes, bigger hamburgers at the fast food joints, larger clothes with the same size labels on them.

If obesity killed as fast as HIV or Cancer, there would be politicians all over it.

You live a terrible lifestyle right now and medicare prolongs your life at great public expense.

20 Things You Didn’t Know About Obesity | Amazing Data

1. Child-safety seat manufacturers are starting to make bigger models after a recent study showed that over 250,000 U.S. children age 6 and under are too fat to use them.
2. According to a study by the Rudd Center for Food Policy and Obesity at Yale University, nearly half the 4,000 people responding to an online survey about obesity said they would give up a year of their life rather than be fat.

3. Between 15 percent and 30 percent also said they would rather walk away from their marriage, give up the possibility of having children, be depressed, or become alcoholic rather than be obese.

4. Five percent and 4 percent, respectively, said they would rather lose a limb or be blind than be overweight.

5. From 1991 to 2000, the average weight of Americans increased by 8.5 pounds.

6. In 2004, the Federal Aviation Administration increased its estimate of the weight of the average male from 170 to 184 pounds.

7. Airlines spent $275 million on 350 million additional gallons of fuel in 2000 to compensate for the additional weight of their passengers. Now we know why the peanuts are no longer free!

8. Stand by your man: More than a decade ago, Manuel Uribe, now weighing 1,200 pounds (the equivalent of five baby elephants) and bedridden for the past five years, was abandoned by his wife because she was frightened by his increasing size.

9. Virgin Atlantic paid Barbara Hewson from Wales the equivalent of US$24,100 in 2002 as compensation after she was squashed by an obese person sitting next to her on a transatlantic flight. Barbara suffered a blood clot in her chest, torn leg muscles, and acute sciatica and was bedridden for a month.

10. Duke University Medical Center found that women and men who lost 10 percent of their total body weight reported a significant improvement in their sexual quality of life.

11. Obesity ranks second among preventable causes of death. Tobacco use is number one.

12. According to the Department of Veteran Affairs, of the 7.5 million veterans who receive their health benefits from the agency, more than 70 percent are overweight and 20 percent have diabetes, which may lead to blindness, amputations, and kidney and heart problems.

13. Two years ago, the Hardee’s fast-food chain introduced the 1,420-calorie 107-fat-gram “Monster Thickburger.” It contains two 1/3-pound slabs of Angus beef, four strips of bacon, three slices of cheese, and mayonnaise on a buttered sesame-seed bun.

14. Mississippi is the home of the mud pie, Cajun fried pecans, sweet potato crunch, fried shrimp, and catfish. Mississippi is also home to the country’s fattest people—more than 25 percent of adult Mississippians are obese. Coincidence?

15. Recent studies have shown that obesity can cause you to lose sleep.

16. On the other hand, a lack of sleep may result in obesity.

17. It’s a vicious cycle.

18. Never forget your past: Aborigines and the Pima indians of Arizona developed obesity, type 2 diabetes, and hypertension after transitioning to a Western lifestyle.

19. If the entire morbidly obese population of the U.S. lived in one state, it would be the 12th highest-populated state, with more people than Virginia.

20. A 2003 study reported that 21 percent of all New York City elementary students from all income levels are obese.
