I have a few hobbies that really don't hold my attention much anymore (recipe OCD, video games, reading) but I've always wanted to get involved in photography, quilting/scrapbooking or Search and Rescue (not really a hobby, and I'd need a dog, and really don't want one of those right now). Anyone have any good sites about how much these things above would cost (aside from the S&R, I have a friend who does it and him and his girlfriend said it's crazy expensive to get the gear). Or is anyone involved in some of these and could possibly give me some pointers?
I detest quilting and scrapbooking, but photography is as easy as getting a decent camera, a book from the library or bookstore with tips and pointer, and start shooting.
Some of best pics in the world have been captured entirely by accident.
That sounds so easy. I have been planning on making each of the kids scrapbooks of their lives, and give it to them when they graduate, but I'm awful at getting things together and making it look nice lol. I'd definately need a new camera, the one I have now is docking, and won't work. I can't figure it the heck out either!
Ask an introvert Sorry I just finished posting on that thread.
I have so many hobbies/interest. When I get bored with one, I pick up something else.
Sewing is a great thing, especially the speciality areas. Look into quilting, smocking, heirloom sewing, etc. Things like smocking and quilting usually have guilds that are fun to belong to. How about gardening? Growing both vegetables and flowers can be so rewarding. Other arts/crafts areas are practically endless. The sky is the limit there!
If you go photography route, dont go too cheap, but not Pro level either. Dont need a Nikon D3x or something. However some of the entry level SLRs they have out now arent all they seem cracked up to be.
In SLRs lenses can make a big diff, and truly good vr lenses can be PRICEY. If you truly think its something you want to do, I would at least look at the Nikon D200/300 level. Great great cameras.

I would love to have a garden, but we can't have one where we live right now, we live in the Trailerhood. But hopefully by the end of summer, we'll be looking for a new place.
Hey, Scared, I'm sure there are ways to help with Search and Rescue short of owning and training your own dog. Fostering, helping out with dog care, helping out with training, cleaning equipment -- there are so many things you can do without making a huge initial investment. So go for it!
I LOVE photograghy.... I favor Canons....just what I am used to-...It seems every other year or 2, I get antsy for a new camera.... I go from SLR to high end pocket ....I use them both....I think this is the best website to read reviews and ask camera questions, all the specs at your finger tips.....this covers all the cameras ....
I get my pics done at ..... Winkflash you can get all sizes, even posters, they have nice sales regularly... been using them for years, I enjoy the quality & their prices. They have upped their shipping a bit but I am hooked now.
I still put my pics (only the best ones) in Photo albums....I never went to the trouble of scrapbooking as I felt it was too time consuming & I would feel overwhelmed & likely my pics would never make it to the album if I had all that extra to do.
I've been surprised by the number of colleges and local community centers that offer photography classes as part of their community service programs. In the last place we lived, a college offered classes in the evening for the general public, and it was usually just a short session of four or five classes. Now, my local community center offers classes for a good price. Take a look around and see what might be offered. I'm not good at photography, but I just got a new Nikon and have been wearing down the batteries.
We also took ballroom dancing lessons a few years ago.
