Now I know we have all seen shows and such about people homeschooling their kids... and hubby and i had considered it for a bit but with our change of plans on what we want to do we decided to put them in a public school when we can. Anyhow... regardless of them being in that school.. we still plan to homeschool them in a sense when we are able. I don't really know how other people homeschool their kids.. but what my hubby and I had planned was... we were going to set them on a schedule exactly like the schools have, giving them an hour for each subject. With the toys, books, and all sorts of learning devices out there.. i really think that helps with homeschooling. Hell at the dollar tree.. they have these books that teach writing, numbers, ect exactly like the ones the schools get. So.. with all of these educational things so readily available I would think a child could get just as good of an education .. being homeschooled as they could being in a public.. or private school. What are your thoughts on this?
I'm personally not a fan - I think that the social aspect of school is as important as the learning
I'm a pretty well educated person but I would never think for a minute that I could teach D to a UK school standard in every subject. Nor would she want to be taught by me!
and we'd end up slacking off and watching old episodes of Friends anyway heh heh
lol I agree the socialization of public schools is important as well.. but they also tend to get that when going to a mall, theatre, ect .. although probably not as good as in a school. The few kids I meant that were home schooled.. well a few were brilliant.. and a few... not so much. They all said they socialize well enough when going out to places such as going to dance classes, ect...
I guess for me.. the learning even when out of school is very important. Such as during summer breaks, ect. I plan on giving them assignments and whatnot to do as well as activities they can enjoy. You know.. to keep their mind sharp and all. I doubt I'll ever have that experience of actually homeschooling my kids.. since both hubby and i plan on being in the military. I guess I just want to have the experience of being able to "teach" them as well... lol
There is also the option on online school as well on top of homeschooling. My daughter was sick for 3 months and the school provided a teacher to come to the house 3-4 days a week for 1-2 hours. On top of that I home schooled her due to my personal opinion of not getting enough hours in. My extra efforts paid off, she was never behind!
I like the public or private schooling. I like the social aspect of it and it really keeps them from getting bored. During the summer I print off math worksheets and other subjects to keep them on track. That also paid off, my girls are not struggling in school and all 3 made the honor roll each semester. Without the extra efforts, they'd be struggling.
I had signed up my daughter for online schooling.. was planning to do the same with my son. So i guess.. it's possible to do both homeschooling and public/private schooling then?
lol if I could.. I would homeschool my kids but as it is.. both me and hubby are going to have to be "working" to accomplish our goals. The reason I wanted to homeschool my kids was because I wanted to be able to experience the joy of teaching them and watching them learn. I guess I'll just have to settle for doing that during the summer time or something.. lol. As far as godlessness... hmm never seen anything in that light... but i guess I have a different view then those people.. lol.
In most situations I believe public/private schools do a better job. My husband and I did end up homeschooling our daughters for Grade 5. We just didn't have the time or commitment to properly do it. They were sent to private school afterwards.
Unfortunately most home schooled children I've known have been lagging way behind their public/private school counterparts. My SIL taught elementary school for 30 years. She came in contact with quite a few home schooled children over the years. She said most of them returning to public school were way behind. I didn't want that for my children.
I tried homeschooling for oh 6 months before I realized it wasn't for me. I have many friends from church who homeschooled which is why I tried it. My biggest complaint was having to be a drill sergent. I want to be "mom" not the teacher.
My other complaint was money. It costs money (here) to be able to get the social part in and my kids need the socialization. There are plenty of activities for homeschool kids but they are pricey. Public school is cheaper.
And now that all my kids are in school I LOVE my alone time way too much to give it up. LOL

I can understand how a parent with little to no time can slip.. but I've seen some who have all the time in the world but their idea of homeschooling is an hour a day doing something like ... watching a video or repeating a word... then spending the rest of the day goofing off... That there is what I don't get. I mean.. if you have that time.. why not actually EDUCATE the child? I know they have the books, ect readily available at stores or wherever... but some people would rather take their kids to a carnival to teach them instead? To me... if you have the time for it and willing to commit enough to say.. hey i will home school my child... then I think it should be done with the same scheduling as a school... Like take me for instance... if I wasn't planning to go into the airforce... I would definately homeschool my kids. I mean I guess I do now in a sense... lol but I mean with an even stricter schedule... Because hell.. if I'm gonna be home all day and make the decision to homeschool.. then i may as well do it that way. I personally wouldn't believe.. an hour a day repeating a word or going to a carnival would be enough.. but i guess thats just me.

lol i get that... but what i don't understand is the people who will homeschool their kids for years, refuse to put them in public school, and ultimately just sit around all day watching tv and letting their kids rot their brains out on video games or tv...

Most of my friends sent their kids to school at some point. Either the kid wanted to play sports, or they wanted the experience, the parent went back to work, etc. A few graduated via homeschooling but around here that's not the norm.
The friends I associated were college educated, high functioning parents not ones that would let their kids watch tv or play video games. I'm sure it happens though. No doubt.
