Been through more than one hurricane, life in central FL.
Back in 2004, I went through 4, Charley was the worst though. STBXH was on the road, nothing new there, and the kids and I spent most of the afternoon/evening huddled in the hallway. All doors were closed. We listened to the wind rage upwards of 100+ mph. that hallway was crowded between 3 humans, a lab, a hamster (caged) and an iguana ( also caged). DS wanted to "witness" the storm thru the huge picture window in the livingroom, had a front row seat. But I won that battle. Next day, Disney came out and cleared my drive of tree debris as apparently that made for a great PR/photo op for them!
When I was a kid, my aunt told us that the thunderstorms was the mommy being angry, and the rain was all the little raindrops jumping off to get away from the angry mommy.
It sounds horrific now, but I actually found it comforting as a child.
That's something I absolutely love about living out east now. The T-storms!!! In the bay area we get t-storms once every 10 years or so... out here though, I love how the sky lights up!
Usually by end of June and througout July we get atleast a couple good ones every week - thundercracks almost every night, and once or twice in the summer we get a big scary one. I love those, but get stressed about damage to the house in those ones - year before last the storm water was almost up to my foundation wall, the field across the street looked like a sea (when illuminated by the lightning). Something kinda fun about battening down the hatches and preparing the yard when you see a large thunderhead blowing in.
Typical summer afternoon T-boomer coming up. This wwas shot from my backyard at the time. Storm came from inland direction, front of our house faced towards the Gulf.
I have been in too many tornado type situations to enjoy a storm if there is any wind at all. ALso, I have had several thousands of dollars of equipment damaged by lightning. I like the soothing sound of a gentle rain though.
Awesome the power of nature. I love a good Tstorm, I even like a good tropical storm or cat 1 hurricane. Beyond cat 1 hurricanes get to messy - awesome for sure - but they become a real PITA.
