Had a frightening experience yesterday when our oldest was taken by Ambulance...
Every parents nightmare... Yesterday sitting in Burger King I get the call.....Oldest is a Camp Counselor 2 hrs away.... The Director assures me he is OK ....but had an "accident".... he went through a window she said !!
The REASON... the little campers were just arriving, there was this big maddening BEE.. he doesn't have a flyswatter, he has some newspaper & his hand.. He thinks he got him -but didn't think the window was that easy to break (not the brightest bulb in a moment of hot pursuit to kill a stinger).. his arm goes right through the darn window, lacerating his upper biceps DARN DEEP (we saw the pictures OMG!- hamburger meat with a hole in the crease of his arm) ... he never lost consciousness though, was even joking with those wrapping him up -he didn't freak out at all... even trying to make the ambulance crew's job easier. The 2 "Heathers" helping him were in more of a panic -but their every step was just what he needed.
I get a call back from the Lady who is sitting with him by his bedside.....she fills me in....a little more serious than we thought... the Orthopedic Surgeon said he was 1-2 centimeters from Tendon DESTRUCTION, could have lost his arm, he needed surgery -might be some glass in there. Also he may have to take some of his muscle leaving an indentation & he might only get 80-85% use of his right arm back. Me & husband threw some things in a bag & drove the 2 hrs...thoughts of how damn lucky he was -but still - visions of "Soul Surfer" going through my head, some tears. All this over a BEE ! What was he thinking !!@#$%^&* He's so young.
This is a Christian Camp, Oh the prayers! Surgery couldn't have went any better last night ... didn't take any muscle, we saw the very GRAPHIC before ...he pointed out the TENDON for inches still beautifully intact..untouched.... said he may not need Physical Therapy even & has hopes he will get full use of his arm back. Music to our ears. Just left with a horseshoe scar...
The Camp Director welcomed us to spend the night at the camp, we ate breakfast with the staff this morning.....at that point...it was up in the air -if he would be coming home with us or staying... everyone there loved our son, his upbeat attitude, just a joyfulness there, even offered to take him to all of his appointments & Physical Therapy just to keep him. He was thought of that much. What a great set of people... witnessing these amazing things -all coming together so very smoothly... not sure if God is trying to get my attention or what...
His restrictions were the same as having a simple Cast ... Ice- elevation, don't get it wet, don't unwap it. Even though the nurses said they never seen a Glass inijury THAT DEEP -without hitting "the very serious".
We are sure THANKFUL tonight that our son is going to be just fine.
Oh & he got that bee! They had it saved in the office.. We all got to lay eyes on it today. Mission accomplished.

I'm glad to hear that he's OK after all that.
I was on business in Texas when DD#2 fell off the jungle gym at school. She landed on her arm with it behind her and twisted off her humerus right above her elbow. She ended up with 2 pins in her arm. So yeah, I know what it feels like to be a long ways away when your kid is hurt.
Re: Had a frightening experience yesterday when our oldest was taken by Ambulance...
SA, so glad he will be ok.
that has to be very hard to go through, for him as well as you and his father.
seems he is very well loved where ever he goes.
Re: Had a frightening experience yesterday when our oldest was taken by Ambulance...
That's very unfortunate. Perhaps next time he can open the window and allow the sentient being to fly free...
I put my arm through a window once - not nearly as severe, but enough to relate to the pain and fear involved!
Wishing him a full and quick recovery!! Must have been scary for you as a parent - as TG stated, I also might have pooped myself if it was my baby! LoL! Posted via Mobile Device
Re: Had a frightening experience yesterday when our oldest was taken by Ambulance...
I got a phone call at 2pm one afternoon that my youngest (2 at the time) had slammed her thumb in the daycare gate They didn't know if it was ok, because it swelled up like a lemon! I drove from work to her school (30 miles, but in traffic, at least an hour) in about 10 minutes and took her to the ER. What an ordeal! She was fine....munchin crackers and sippin juice from the ER staff as we waited...danced for everyone, flirted with the doctors I was a wreck and she acted like she was at a party!!
Once, in my class, a boy had his hand in the doorjam to hold the door open, and another kid (being a turd) slammed it and sliced off the top joint of the kids finger HOLY CRAP! I don't know how I managed to walk the kid, finger wrapped in paper towels to the nurses office. But when the ambulance took him away, and they collected his finger bit from my room, my knees gave out and I was done for the day. EESH! Kids, man.
Re: Had a frightening experience yesterday when our oldest was taken by Ambulance...
So sorry for what happened. I know how frightening it can be. Recently got that same kind of call about my wife (a few months ago, she had a similar accident as your son, but her leg was cut). She wanted to take this huge print to the store for a new frame and matt. She had taken the frame loose, so I told her to secure the glass, and offered to help, but she declined. She took it in without securing the glass, deciding that I was being overprotective, as usual, and you guessed it. The glass fell out and took the skin off her shin down to the bone, peeling about ten inches of skin away, two cuts about three inches apart as it peeled skin and muscle. Doc says she will probably limp forever.

^^^^Now going to begrudgingly think twice when H seems to be acting overprotective but sure as heck won't admit that to HIM. (Though I'm sure he'll read this with a smug look on that face of his!!!)

Re: Had a frightening experience yesterday when our oldest was taken by Ambulance...
My initial reaction to this was very very calm sitting in Burger King hearing he didn't loose consciousness & was in good spirits -even on the way to the hospital.....then it hit me ....how utterly rediculous this was...I expected a Boating accident, He fell of a cliff.... NOT a "BUG" accident !! This was surely not one of his brighter moments !
This may make me sound half loopy (as a Mother who just heard her kid is in an Ambulance)...but I even started laughing just thinking how he got his butt on this situation... The kids were waiting for "the news" I just received sitting around me ....... #1 I told them..... their brother was OK, he will be FINE..... then I had to work this up a bit.. and asked if they were ready for this... Yep... It sounded like something their brother might do ...they even .... he does get overly enthusiastic in accomplishing a task and making a BIG SHOW of it ...we could just see it. He was never accident prone though, this was his 1st, he had to do it with a BIG BANG I guess.
If I would have heard he lost consciousness, or he couldn't move his fingers, I would have been a freaking Basketcase, my mind in 20 directions, a FLUSH of dread would have overtaken me, probably would have gotten clammy on the spot......I've felt that before when I've had a sudden rush of worrying ....the unknown is the worst.
But when it is small...and it looks like a minor set back... I don't sweat it at all ...It is just when it is REALLY BAD NEWS... could be life changing...then things change from White & "it's gonna be Ok" to....suddenly "Black"...OMG OMG OMG.
Obviously when I got the 2nd call hearing it was just a centimeter or so from his tendon.....it suddenly got more serious, realizing how close to life changing it was!!! Even that night after his surgery, a Great report... I kept playing the...."What IF senerios in my head, it could make you sick just imagining what could have been, the long difficult road ahead , his right arm limp & lifeless at the mercy of Doc reattaching the wires or movement.
He was more Chipper & upbeat than any of us... yesterday morning he raved about his breakfast omelet saying..... "that omelet was so good it was worth the hole in my arm". Yeah, still kidding around. His attitude the whole time was very encouraging to us all. He never took 1 pain pill after the surgery either. He is trying to brave it. We kept trying to help him do things and he'd say "I'm not disabled"... it was funny watching him buttoning his jean shorts, took him about 2 minutes but he got it !

DOWN TO THE BONE ! Darn!!!! Yeah very similar situation there .. with your wife...how much worse this could have been also. Glass is one dangerous thing...don't we know. My husband has always gotten worked up over it, would be happy if all our dishes were plastic.
Did she need surgery too!? The Doc explained to us, even if a little fragment of glass was left in there, it would be fine, scar tissue will form around it and many times the body pushes it closer to the skin and it pops out -eventually. That was pretty comforting to learn.
What happened to your wife... your warning, her thinking "no big deal".... this sounds like something that happens in our house too - My husband tries to protect, I say "you worry too much"....and sometimes I live to regret and he enjoys telling me .... "I told you so " .
Re: Had a frightening experience yesterday when our oldest was taken by Ambulance...
My FIL got a heart valve replacement about 10 years ago. His roomie while recuperating was a guy that fell through a window and had a piece of glass lodged in his lung and heart and had emergency surgery to save his life.
