I'm not up on my vampires but perhaps it's not your bag, so it's not porn for you. And some women find strippers funny but not sexy. So not porn for them.

But some women are at least being very ostentatious of finding it sexy and arousing. I believe them. So for them, its porn. If it is sexy and arousing, it's porn. And for many women, as evidenced by the huge section at the book store, erotica does it too.

Before anyone jumps on me for this let me just say that there are different types of porn and people may be ok with some and not others, and this can be debated but it doesn't change what it is.

I've read Fifty Shades, it's porn

Thank you. Clearly sexy vampires and bdsm fantasies are not just innocent literary interests. Are women reading 50 shades for the great prose?

See, by the definition given above, nearly EVERY movie that comes out of Hollywood would be classified as porn. They have sex scenes. What is the purpose of a sex scene in a movie? Say it with me everyone....

So, really, it's not just Magic Mike. It's not just chick flicks. Going by the definition above, there are relatively few movies that would pass the pornography scrutiny. So, I guess, based on the definition above... my husband and I watch porn, regularly.

Well, FWIW, my 'women's porn' is porn...pretty simple, eh? Male stripper movies, Chippendales, 50 Shades? A joke by comparison. I can't believe that people compare them to porn...

I would partially agree, most movies and books do have porn in them. I think a distinction is made on the general purpose or intent of the media. A fiction book, may include snipits of fact but doesn't make the work non-fiction. A thriller movie may have some sex scene but it's main purpose it to scare. Some of my wife's romance novels have sex scenes but mostly it's about the characters romance. Like anything there is some interpretations. Fifty shades is mostly badly written porn with a side story attached, I would categories it as porn. As for Magic Mike, I haven't seen it but my wife didn't go for the story line.

Agree, Nice way to explain it!

I know everyone associates 'for male' porn with pictures of naked bodies going at it but even the fully clothed sunsine girl in the paper is porn.

As I said upthread, I believe the comparison is not in the specific content, but in the impact on the audience...the effect it has on them.

I don't think anyone is trying to say that, for example, the content of Magic Mike is equivalent to the content of the latest hardcore sex movie, but that they can have similar effects on their respective audiences. (Of course, given the current trend of sexually explicit "parodies" of mainstream tv and movies, I'm sure filmin is already underway on at least one "Magic Mike XXX" or variation thereof.)

As an aside, this is as good a place as any to say something I've been meaning to since earlier in the thread. Candie, I just wanted to til my proverbial hat to you. From this thread and others we've participated in where the subject has come up, you seem to have a solid, logical, rational view of porn. You're able to separate the genre from individuals who might be misusing it, and, to make a gross overgeneralization, that appears to be rare in women. I know you and your husband have had issues regarding it, but you seem to still be able to make the distinction between the two. That takes a lot of self awareness and self confidence.

Thanks for your compliment! The only reason porn is even an issue with us is because my husband lies and hides his use AND ignores me sexually. We are in recovery at the moment, however.

(FWIW I've watched dirtier/more hardcore stuff than HE ever has!)

LMAO!!!

Thanks. Indeed, clothed can be sexier that nude! That's why lingerie is so nice.

Ok, so just got back from watching the movie.... in my opinion this is not a porn. The trailers have made this movie out to be more than what it really is! I did not see any more nudity then in some of the other movies. The plot was ok and seeing Matthew as a jerk was weird but overall it was a good movie. I want to watch it again with HB just to hear his comments cuz there will be some :-)

Nudity isn't the determining factor for porn. The statue of David is full frontal nudity but not considered porn.
Take a look at Grayson's excellent post above, explains it very well I think.

Glad you liked the movie, I hate paying good money for a movie I didn't like

I saw Magic Mike with my bf and I have to say that while it was very enjoyable for me, there was plenty of female nudity for him. The story took place in Tampa where we live and that is the only reason he agreed to go, but we both ended up enjoying it.

I did enjoy Gil Gardot in her bikini. The car babes are always a laugh in those movies. I guess just like the ladies get a laugh out of the men. But its still sexual no matter what people want to admit. But yeah watching this moving is nothing like a woman rubbing a male stripper down with lotion. I have no doubt at some point my wife and I will see Magic Mike. I am guessing this is a chick flick. LOL.

I am morbidly interested to see if they even infer the outrageous behaviors even if they do not show it. I forget the name of the old movie about how Chippendales got started and they at least were honest about the sex the extracurriclar sex that went on. Of course these "shows" have come a long way since those days.

I finally watched that trailer form the original post. It would have been a lot worse if they interviewed ladies after the movie and they were somehow putting down thier BFs and hubbys. BUT that is not what I saw. To me a harmless comment by folks trying to market a movie IMO. .

Anything with Vin Diesel in it is pure testosterone.
My wife loves him. That is one of her " eye candies ."
IMO, Pitch Black , Rid**** and Fast Five were his best.

I have been reading on TAM comments about this " Magic Mike " movie. I really don't see what is the fuss. Maybe it's because of culture. But I don't think the movie is even showing down here. The biggest movies release here on the same date they are released up there. But my guess is that the cinema ownere know our culture, and they probably know this movie will not really be a hit here.
Chippendales came here some years ago and literally flopped.
Ours is a society where there are Carnivals in different islands almost right through the year and semi nude men & women party and gyrate in the streets for days.....
We don't have much strip clubs either,it simply would not work. What we have is lots of male & female escort and exotic massage parlours etc. That is big business.
It is quite normal to see both male and females dancing suggestively, gyrating in public at fetes, and beach parties. So nobody will pay to see that in a strip joint.
What people pay for here is sex, both males & females.
