I am from a farm community. Our yearly festival is the "Pork Festival" They have greased pig contests and people can sit and watch a hog getting butchered.
Our high school FHA class has a "Drive your tractor to school day"
We like to drive past and see all the tractors lined up down the road.
LOL! Definitely a country folk here. I've visited some impressive cities, but none compare to my beloved farm.
Speaking of FFA, I used to be our FFA secretary. We had some fun, but nothing as creative as your FFA group. There aren't too many FFA chapters left in my area now. Too many city folks have moved in and the farms are disappearing.
Even though our rural area is rapidly changing, we still have some interesting festivals going stronger than ever. There's the Rattlesnake Rodeo, Chittlin' Festival, Mule Days, Watermelon Festival, and Possum Festival to name a few that come to mind.
I've lived in the suburbs of Chicago and the suburbs of West Palm Beach. I was raised in a small town. The highlight of the summer when I was growing up was the County Fair. I lived two hours' drive from the closest mall/real shopping. When I lived in the suburbs, it was much, much closer. Now, I live in a town where I have to drive 25 miles to the closest WALMART, supermarket...anything, really. There are less than 1000 people in our town. I love it. It's who I am. Don't get me wrong. If hubby were to get a job in the city again, I'd move, of course. But here? I'm in my element.
Originally from a small town and love the country.Needing to be where the work is,I've found myself many years in the city.Lately,I've been hearing the call of home more and more.Hope to make it there soon.
see I love the silence and privacy, and out here, the night sky is absolutely amazing..its so beautiful I wouldn't trade it for anything. I don't like lots of people, I hate other drivers, and don't enjoy feeling crowded.
on the opposite side, I'm so not a redneck/country whatever person its almost a let down to my family. lol. so I couldn't tell you what I am
im a city gal. i need bright lights, sirens, places to go at midnight or 2am.
living out in the country.....in the dark....scares the crap outta me....no no no, give me freeway traffic any day.
i need cars, buses, police, firetrucks, taxis, people, loud bumpin music....silence--??? nope, dont need constant quiet, noise dosent bother me......
but, its nice and quite outside at 3am. very peaceful.
But it's not quiet here,,, lol. You hear the crickets, critters, and 7 am chickens ****a doodle doo... alarm clock.
When you drive past the farms, and can smell the "real" country air. (manure).
I love going past the fields when they're harvesting in the fall, corn dust flying from the combines. Just peaceful.
From where I live, about 2-3 miles from our fairgrounds, during the summer I can hear the derbys, and tractor pulls...
We don't even have a taxi service here in town... except for the pre elected DD.
A plethora of diverse food at my fingertips or a few quick steps. Sushi at 1 AM. Mediterranean at 3 AM. Closing down the bar and having somewhere still open to quell the munchies. Oh man, I need that.
People. Diverse crowds. So easy to find the drag queen/pancake hangout because it's right around your corner.
Indie coffee shops! Indie record stores! RIGHT THERE. Art museums! Big giant public library! RIGHT THERE!
Not having to have a car, biggest plus in my mind.
I tried country life, I missed all of the above and so much more I'm just too thoroughly city!

I live in a large city, like 2 million people. But it's very clean, folks here are forced to take care of their cars, and we have hybrid buses.
It's not a lot of light pollution either. The stars are beautiful and the moon is so bright.
We have frogs, and bats, and a slew of birds that start singing at 4 am, sometimes earlier.
It's very green and the air is clear and clean. Crickets cicadas and other gross chirpy tree bugs. Owls, hawks.
I live within walking distance of a national chain grocery store, post office, 4 different bus lines. A library.
There is a Walmart close by, and a Starbucks. I stay near the best burgers and fries, the best fish and chips, the best Chinese food place.
2 pubs, a bar, a 7 eleven right across the street. A freeway, police station, fire house, a huge park, downtown is 12 minutes away.
I live 20 minutes from one mall and 30 from another. An ihop is close a secondary 24 hour grocery store, a secondary Starbucks, a bookstore, a the best pizza joint.
A target, best buy, trader joes, marshals, staples, 2 antique stores, a salvation army, 2 other resale stores (up scale).
I'm about 30 minutes from an amusement park, still in the same city. We can still go out to the country and still find road side fruit stands.
A good amount of museums. A huge indoor water park.
Although we don't stay by the state fair.
Nice quiet dark country life...I'd go crazy. I need the noise. Right now I'm sitting a the conscience store and they have live music, and a bunch of people running in and out....but in a few hours, I will be so quiet.
I like the noise, the hustle and bustle, the energy, the variety of ethnic restaurants, the diversity of people, shops, art/music/cultural events of all kinds. There's always something to see or do. Places are open to the wee hours of the morning.
The first time I spent time in the country I couldn't get over how dark it got at night. I couldn't even see my hand when I held it out in front of me. That was spooky to me at the time.

I have always stayed in a large city, just shy of a million people. So we moved to a city just shy of 2 million people.
And hell to the no..I ain't livin that far from food or a mall. What if I needed a movie and it was 8 on a Tuesday nite???
We buy the strangest things from Walmart after midnight. Light bulbs, fusses, cat litter, undies, shoes, steaks, a DVD player, av cords, VHS tapes, kitchen wares,
But huh uh. I needs my shopping. I've been to 2 malls (4x) target (2x) bestbuy (2) this week. At least....
Walmart at least 4 different times.
Not a usual week, but pretty close. I couldn't survive living so far away from things. I personally would be soo unhappy.
