Default quitting smoking....

OMG.. i feel like i'm gonna die. everyone who smokes knows that smoking is disgusting and no one really finds it attractive... but if you're addicted then you're addicted.

i've had to quit smoking because of an upcoming medical procedure... and i dont even know how many days it's been.. i cant even concentrate on anything other that smoking. i'm also on a diet that i'm really not enjoying (adkins is my pre op diet) so maybe that's contributing.... but the crazy thing is i only smoked like 3 cigarettes a day.. but it was habitual. basically after ever meal ... and more if my hubs and i were at each other and i just needed a break.

i'm going insane.. does anyone have any tips or tricks to get this outta my head!?

Did you smoke menthols? If so, try a minty gum when you feel the urge (that was my remedy). I've heard mixed reviews about the electric cigarettes that emit water vapor. I believe they're pricey, but so are regular smokes.

im great at quitting smoking, done it a few times.

try a electronic cigarette. i have two. They take the edge off. Its a mental plus a little nicotine fix from a cartridge. Rechargable.
in my case i evolved to smoking them inside on occasion, and never actually really managed to totally quit smoking. i still light up a cigarette once in a while.

Two things that helped me quit a pack a day back in 1995 - staying busy and large bags of peanut M&M's.

I can understand OP's withdrawals... Holy moly I'm a pack a day and hating it. I wake up in the middle of the night with withdrawals.

At three cigs a day I'd imagine that your chances of success with quitting are great! Replace the smoking activity with something else... Like a walk.

Are you physically addicted? This makes quite a difference in how you are able to respond to treatment...

Ahhh in theory that would work... but the surgery she is having... that won't work.

I've been told by other friends who quit that having a sucker/lollipop helped. In your case, see if you can find sugar free ones. My mom had to quit in order to have her surgery. Wasn't long after and she started up again

I hope you don't do what she did.

This is such a HUGE battle for any addicted smoker - it's not like we can just put them down and forget about it. Withdrawal is for real and it is HELL.

I liken the feeling within my body as being on a crazy rollercoaster ride with no end in sight. Your body has that constant "falling" feeling and it's awful. Especially if people aren't particularly sympathetic during your ride through hell.

I've spent bouts cig-free thanks to patches - but when they wear off, the rollercoaster of hell comes back.

I WISH that someone would have told me that, one day when you WANT to quit, it will be the most difficult feeling you will EVER have to live through. I watched my ex's paternal grandmother and my "grandmother-in-law" die from smoking... Yet the addiction lives. It's truly the most difficult thing I've tried quitting, and to be honest, daily use of speed was much easier.

Wishing you the best of luck during this difficult time... ((Hugs))

My brother in law was a two pack a day smoker and someone I thought would NEVER EVER quit, but then at 51 he suffered a bad heart attack that left him in the hospital for 2 weeks and he did survive thank God. But since that happened two years ago he put those death sticks down and hasn't touched one since, and he also went out and lost 40 lbs to boot and looks great.

^^ This is inspiring - unfortunate that he had a heart attack, but so glad he was able to kick. I am sure that being in the hospital that long actually helped him get through the withdrawals.

This is such a sensitive topic for me particularly. I am glad that everyone here has been respectful.

I quit using electronic cigarettes. I think they worked because they helped with the hand-to-mouth habit, as well as the nicotine. And it was pretty easy for me to stop using the electronic cigarettes. I didn't feel the same withdrawal symptoms that I did when trying to quit cigarettes - I think the millions of other chemicals they put in cigarettes are actually far more addictive than nicotine by itself.

For those interested, google Electronic Cigarette Forum. It's a great place to learn which ones are good (they vary in quality and price) and how to avoid getting ripped off by the charlatan internet vendors (and the mall kiosk vendors).

aww... thanks you guys!! i too am very surprised that everyone is being respectful. so it's much appreciated!

unfortunately replacing smoking with some kind of sweet or food isnt an option for me right now.. but i'm really proud of you guys who kicked it!!

last night i literally had a dream that i went out to my car where i happen to have an old pack... which is a gross kind that i dont really like (so that i wont be all that tempted.. but the thought of that as insurance is comforting) and just went nuts.

i'd have to read more on the electronic cigarette thing... if it messes with your oxygen levels then that is also not an option.

thanks for all the suggestions and support!

It's a vapor, so I wouldn't think it would be any more harmful than smoke. I'm not a big fan of eCigs, but if they work go for it!! I had lots of success on the patch before, although not all patches are created equal... For some reason I still experience withdrawal on some brands, even if they are the same strength as the ones that work for me. NicoDerm is my favorite.

A lot of what helped gate to quit smoking and not fall back into the habit was lack of money and a very busy schedule. We did get him that nicoderm patch but those were giving him rashes so he quit using them after a month and a half. He still gets cravings for a smoke though lol.

I always just quit cold turkey because i knew if i had "limited" myself to so many a day i would still be smoking.

i chewed gum and really slept it off more than anything.
everyone is different though.

maybe yo ucan do a crafty project that is detailed takes up time that you know you will be able to focus on!

hope you stay quit you will feel much better!!!!!!!
