Default How long does a UTI/kidney infection last?

My first kidney infection last Jan landed me in the hosp for 5 nights on IV antibiotics and a pcp pump. I was sick for months. I had 2 more IV antibiotics after being hospitalized with loads of oral antibiotics before I finally got better. It took about 3 or more months to heal. It was quite the ordeal. I felt like I was dying and the pain was much worse then natural childbirth.

Just 2 days ago I have blood in my urine again and my kidney hurts. I do have permanent damage to the one kidney because it hurts 8 months later when I lay on that side. Now it is a constant ache, but bearable and I'm not in the hospital yet. I went to a walk in clinic and sure enough there is blood and white cells in my urine. Oh great, the anxiety hits me. My wonderful husband called into work to stay home and keep an eye on me. That was very sweet.

They put me on a sulfur antibiotic, which I'm surprised I'm not allergic to since I'm allergic or sensitive to all other medications.

How long do normal UTI/kidney infections last? I feel like a crumb. The kids are home from school, so I must force myself out of bed to feed them. Otherwise they are self sufficient. Luckily I have 4 days of pryidium, a MAJOR life savor.

Does anyone else go through this? This time is not even as close as bad as the last time. If I still have this fever/body and other part aches I'll see my NP for a check up. I emailed her and she said to come in if I'm not better. I have the best NP anyone could ask for. I'm on day 2 of antibiotics.

On top of this I have a stupid cold coming on. Plus I was born with a deformed kidney, so this does complicate things.

Aw man, I feel for you, I've had kidney infections and stones, the infections are much much worse. I've laid there and prayed for death. I've heard of people saying that cranberry juice does wonders on an infection. The acid base created in the kidneys will destroy the bacteria causing the infection. But, if you have gout, this is a very bad idea. I drank cranberry juice by the gallons, so instead of one stone, I ended up with 7 or 8. Cant get comfortable, and it feels like pissing gasoline, it sucks.

My hubby is picking up my prydium refill today. I asked him to buy my cranberry pills. I hate juice and all that sugar. Hopefully the cranberry pills work like the juice.

I've been told by lots of people that the juice will knock an infection out real quick. Best of luck with it, its agonizing and I dont wish that on anyone. The pain pills the doc prescribes dont do squat for that kind of agony. So sorry your dealing with this.

Sorry you're having to deal with that. I had a UTI last year, didn't think it was ever going away. Finally after about 3 rounds of different antibiotics it finally cleared up.

Also you can ask them what type of bacteria was found in the UTI because cranberry juice will not work for certain types of bacteria. E Coli is the most common bacteria of UTIs and that is the main one cranberry juice will not work for, it actually thrives off of it. So ask them what type of bacteria it is, they should be able to tell you.

Sorry to hear this.

Mrs P had a UTI that led to a kidney infection about 2 years ago. She never had a UTI and didn't recognize the symptoms. I guess it got pretty "bad", a trip to the ER with her puking out her guts was called for. That being said IV antibiotics in the ER and follow pills had her back to normal in under 2 weeks.

And I wish you a speedy recovery, it's possible. (Trying to give you some hope.)

Thanks. I'm downing the water like crazy! I was told to with the sulfa antibiotic.

The pharmacy just called and said I can't get my pyridium refill until tomorrow due to insurance. How stupid, it runs out today. Luckily I have AZO as a backup, but it doesn't work as well.

At least my kids are in a great mood today.

You can flush a bladder infection but not a kidney infection. When its in your kidneys, you need medication. Strong medication. Cipro XL - go to a walk in and get a prescription. Every day is vital. There are upper and lower UTIs. You really need to start taking better care of yourself!!!

I can't take cipro or levoflaxin(sp). I'm allergic to them. They have me on a a strong sulfa drug this time for 6 days. Which is 2 antibiotics in one.

I'm really self conscious when it comes to my health. By having a deformed kidney(only one), I'm prone to having these infections. I've been so careful not to repeat this, but apparently not careful enough. Thank God I'm not in the hospital this time. Last time I spent 5 nights on IV antibiotics and I have damage to my kidney from it. My kidney hurts like heck now and all I'm doing is laying in bed, drinking water, and taking my meds. I'm pretty sick with a fever too. . This is not fun. I'm thankful it's not as bad as last time. I'm sure I'll be back in the doc in a day or two. My NP wants to see me and stay on top of this.

I'm assuming this is from having such a healthy intimate lifestyle with my husband. We need to take extra precautions in the future.

Ug - Sorry you are dealing with this. I tend to get UTIs if I don't pee IMMEDIATELY after sex. Really kills the snuggling mood but if I don't I'll be passing blood in 24 hours.

I don't know if cranberry works for kidneys but there is a concentrate that isn't full of sugar that might be decent for maintenance...

I'm sure your medical people can advise you on best preventatives. Fortunately they've never gotten to my kidneys but I know immediately when one is coming on and what to do about it and to not hesitate!

I had a bladder infection months ago. It lasted a few weeks. The meds kick in after a few days and start to feel better.

I have a rare kidney disease that causes large stones to form stuck in the kidney and occasionally they have to go get them which is thru the back on me between the 12 and 13th rib after 3 of these surguries your kidneys dont function as they should anyway i would also suggest having a urlogist do the jug test thats where you pee in a jug for 24 hours and its analyzed from mine they determined that I had a mineral deficiency and put me daily medication since this (knock on wood ) i have not had any more stones or surguries I also had to change my diet to low salt lots of water no coffee, no sodas, no calicum like shakes etc

Luckily I don't have any kidney stones. At least I don't think so. I was tested for them the last episode while in the hospital. My biggest fear is getting a kidney disease. I already am disabled with neck pain.

I get stones from time to time-ugh.

Someone on this site said that lemon juice and olive oil are good for the pain.

I have struggled with UTIs my whole adult life. I get them very suddenly...symptoms come on strong in less than an hour. I am at the doctors office within the same day.

I would guess that when you had that bad infection awhile back, you probably were on enough abx to kill the bacteria down to a level that was below what would show symptoms or show up on a test. That doesn't mean there weren't any bacteria left...and under the right circumstances (like a sudden stint of sex, or letting yourself get dehydrated) they will grow again and bam...you are right back where you started.

For me, that's how it was anyway.

I had to go on a long term, low dose abx for 3 months. The 3-6 day doses were making me feel better but within 1-2 months I was back at square one. Have you asked your doc about it? Repeated infections can damage your kidneys and it sounds like you are already fragile in that area.

My doc always told me that sulfa (bactrim, etc) is preferred to treat UTIs. I only remembered that because I am allergic to it and always had problems with the second-string abx I was prescribed.
