Planet Fitness - Take my money..please...

So there is a "Planet Fitness" near me.... I've been thiking about joining a club and it would be convenient. I see they have them everywhere. I know nothing about them.

I walk in..about 7:00 at night on my way home. The place is fairly busy.. I see they have a ton of equipment. I'm like... 'ok. Sign me up.'

The bubbly little thing behind the desk smiles and says 'OK!' and takes out a contract and starts reading me some standard babble about 'no judgemental..blah blah..'

I tell her fine, but sorry - Im not signing any contract. I am happy to pre-pay a year or 2 for your 'black card' membership so I can use the other clubs in the area, but Im not giving you access to my checking account - and I dont want a recurring charge on my credit card.

Her response: 'sorry. we cant do that.'

me: 'really? seriously? you wont take my money?"

her: "sorry. we cant do that."

So - they wont even take the money I am trying to shovel at them? All they care about it the ability to clamp onto me with some form of recurring charge? Crazy.

We already have a family membership to the Y... which is OK.. maybe I will just go there to get rolling.

Are all health clubs like this? Maybe I am simply better off somewhere else.. but like I said they seem to have lots of them around so would be nice - such as both near my work and near my house. Guess not.

This really isn't as big of a deal as you're making it out to be. I've done automatic drafts on all kinds of expenses over the years and a couple yes ended up shady (meaning I struggled to get them to stop taking money out when I cancelled).

When we bought this house we got suckered into a home warranty paid for by automatic draft. When researching how to cancel I googled this company and found out they were shady meaning it's hard to get them to stop taking money. Ooops my bad. I just called my bank, told them I lost my debt card, had them cancel that one and issue a new one. Problem solved.

Gym contracts are common and requiring automatic drafts is also common. I wouldn't let that stop me from using their services.

My wife belongs to a local gym in our area and they do the same thing. The draft it out.

Re: Planet Fitness - Take my money..please...

Yeah I am probably just being a weenie, but I typically I want people/cmpanies to ask me for money - and NOT my having to ask (in writing - or at a certain time, or a certain place..whatever), to have them to stop taking it. Big difference to me. If I decide to not renew - then my 'membership expires', simple.

They insist on this because they know how effective it is in squeezing extra money out of people.

I'll go somewhere different. No biggie.

Trying to get out of my gym membership was like trying to leave a cult.

Or get jumped out of a gang. Seriously. Never again.

And you're right to not want people to have access to that. Shady business!

Ditto - Planet Fitness and auto draft. No biggie. It's not like they are taking any more than what I agree to in the 'contract'. That's what the contract is for. And once a year equipment maintenance fee of $25- usually in August.

I've gone to the same one for 6 or 7 years now. They do a good job keeping everything clean and well-run.

And I'm sure they make a lot of money because people sign up, stop going, forget to cancel, etc. But the YMCA here does the same thing. I guess I *could* pay in advance for a whole year at the YMCA but it's so freaking expensive $85 for family - that I quit going. They have exercise classes and a pool. PF has everything but those two things. I have a pool so and I can live without the classes.

Re: Planet Fitness - Take my money..please...

I read up on Planet Fitness on line and they REALLY got slammed (from people all over the country), so I opted NOT to go with them.

I joined SnapFitness (2000 locations worldwide) Snap Fitness Locations
It's bare bones, stripped down, go in and work out, go home.
For ONE person: $30/month OR $80/3months OR $155/6months. It's cheaper per person for a HOUSEHOLD membership.

You pay in advance (check or cash...dunno if they take cards), you belong as long as you want...you want to quit - quit paying. I can also put my membership on 'hold' (if you go to FL for the winter, for example). It's got WHAT I need, no crap I don't need (including the whole "dating scene" feel of a PowerhouseGym), at a reasonable price. Did I mention it's open 24/7, 365/year? You get a passcard that lets you in at ANY hour (lights inside are motion-activated).

Just found out one of the SnapFitness near me has a pool. I can go to ANY SnapFitness in the world. Think I'll go check out the pool later this month.

Hope this helps!

Re: Planet Fitness - Take my money..please...

I can't stand these types of requirements either. Seriously, a few years ago, I helped a coworker set up a budget after numerous financial hardships, and he found a couple of memberships that he had been paying for from his wife for years, and couldn't even remember the places.

My wife wanted to join a place like this, even though we own a gym, so we set up an alternate account at our credit union. I put in a year's worth of funding for that and the various other automatic drafts she has - and no more. I also made sure that there was no money swapping options on the account from other accounts, and I'll get text alerts when the fund is getting low. There was no charge for any of this, and my credit union allows you to set it all up online.

That's just me - I'm a little obsessive with protecting my accounts.

Re: Planet Fitness - Take my money..please...

Yeah they said they rarely run 'promotions' and they do that, but not for the real membership where you can go to other locations.

And I couldn't do it... Say the other day since that offer wasn't on the table.

Guess they will sorta do it when they get desperate.
