Default regarding bannings and deletions

As a result of this thread

http://talkaboutmarriage.com/coping-...tml#post885599

I would like to suggest the following:
- a specific procedure be developed and made public as to what infractions result in being banned and how the mods will determine it (including how they determine the length of the ban). Obvious spammers excepted.
- I propose that the same be done for posts and threads that are deleted, locked or otherwise altered (why lock the thread referenced above? So what if it was in the 'wrong' forum? It could have been moved) OR
- make it a policy that NOTHING gets deleted or edited by the mods
- we declare July 7 every year as official MOD APPRECIATION DAY and recognize them for all the hard work they do.

Well, that already exists, it's called the TOS.

I do agree with you on Mod Appreciation Day. Part of that is not second guessing what they do.

The original is now reopened in this very section. And I wouldn't call expressing genuine concerns to necessarily be "second guessing." That phrase seems to imply that there can't be any room for improvement to processes and procedures, but there's always room for it.

Well, sure, there's always room for improvement, Grayson, but face it, we're all swayed by our personal biases, who we like and who we don't like, etc. The mods have the unenviable task of rising above that. Maybe they fail sometimes, but do we really want them to be subject to public opinion? Because a) it's a private site and b) public opinion is often wrong. JMHO.

To a degree...yes, I do want them to be subject to public opinion, or, more accurately, open to discussion and suggestion. And I say this not just as someone who posts to a board, but as someone who is currently a mod on a pretty active board and owner or co-owner and admin of three basically defunct boards. So, I know the task they face. And, I know that concerns over board management and moderation arise from time to time. I've found that the best way to deal with them is to openly weigh the feedback presented. That doesn't mean that changes WILL be made. (I used to work in a group called the "Resolution Team." Customers referred to us didn't seem to realize that, just because we would reach a resolution, that didn't always mean it would be one that THEY agreed with.) But, it does mean that they'll be considered, and beneficial changes might occur. It's also been my experience that such generalized concerns are normally born from specific events, so there's value in discussing those specifics, as well.

The TOS does not address all the issues, obviously.

So you think we should all just shut up and act like meek little sheep?? Seriously? FYI we were invited to post exactly what I posted. I wasn't aware this was Germany in the 1940's.

The board I moderated was totally subject to public opinion. Everything - EVERYTHING - was voted on. Everything. Notice I am not suggesting that

Sorry, you have violated Godwin's Law

Seriously, Hope?

I think you have expressed your opinions in this thread, and honestly, I'm sure they will be taken into account. The mods here seem pretty receptive.

I'm not sure that comparing any of us to Nazis will result in a constructive dialogue, so don't do that, okay?

It surprises me to no end that people here actually think the mods should just be given carte blanche. What on earth is wrong with discussing things that they do ??? And questioning questionable decisions?

Did you miss the part where we were invited to post what I posted?

It astounds me that people seriously think we shouldn't question the mods. Yes I have expressed my opinions in this thread, are you saying I should shut up now? Because I'm not going to.

NOTE TO THE MODS: I seriously am not upset with what you guys have done. I am just trying to point out alternatives and ideas you may or may not have considered. It's the people who are saying I should shut my big yap that have me upset, if anyone.

I didn't say you should shut up. I said you should quit comparing the mods to Nazis.

I was banned for instigating a stupid troll chick. When I tried to log in, it said I was banned for that. I don't regret it, but it would have been nice if the people who come on here and write stupid things get banned too. She wasn't.

Nowhere have I compared the mods to Nazis. What I did was express a comparison between the people here and the people of Nazi Germany, with respect to their need to just keep quiet when they didn't agree with authority. not the best comparison, admittedly, but you're really reaching to accuse me of comparing the mods to Nazi's. Don't put words into my mouth please.

Ohhh, compare it to the USA at this point We say NO and the gov pretends they don't hear us. LOL! But...I don't think of the mods that way...just the USA gov.

This is probably going to sound like I'm sucking up to the mods, but I'm not. I've been a moderator elsewhere.
It's a thankless job. You're never tough enough for some people who want certain topic/posters/posts gone and you're too tough for others if you delete posts/topics they or their friends made. It's a thankless volunteer job.

On the other boards I've been on, posts were deleted or they were moved to a private part of the board only mods could see. I don't know how things work here as far as whether deleted posts are gone for good, but things here seem more or less like other places I've visited.

Mouthing off at the mods ALWAYS got people deleted no matter what board I've been on. It's one of those things that's never a good idea.

Not like we pay for the site. They do their job and that's that.

Although, for long term members who get caught up in the moment, you'd think they tell us to stfu before banning us. Then again, we always have that choice to click the "post" button.

Oh yes she was ;-)
