How do you decide who you vote for?

I am curious about people's thoughts on this as there are many different reasons why someone might choose to pick a candidate. What I was hoping for was some real introspection into why we pick the people we do. It can easily just be dismissed and say 'I always pick the candidate that is best' or something like that, but why is that person the 'best'?

Best for you?
Best for others?
Best for everyone?
Best for people you care about?

My thoughts about this started as I am consistently told that my choice of candidates are bad for my demographics. I have no doubt about that, and I am sure we could unpack why I might choose to do that. Things such as guilt, or feeling unworthy of my successes or underserving perhaps. Either way, I spend time thinking about that sort of thing when it comes to myself.

So, I was just curious about other people here. I am not here to poke at anyone's choices, just interested in the thoughts of others on the subject.

I donít vote for anyone, ever.
In my opinion the type of people who put themselves forward for election are the very last people who should be voted into power.

When someone says itís not the money itís the principle,itís always the money.

If the 2016 presidential race was the model. We wait for the machine to spit out the race survivors, and then vote for the candidate that will do the least damage.

That is what it has come to for me as well. I don't get excited about the president anymore. I just want for the USA to still be a Capitalistic Democratic Republic for my great grand children. It seems to be becoming more of an Oligarchy, however.

Re: How do you decide who you vote for?

I review the party's platforms, and vote for the party that has the platform I agree with the most - both for the country, and for me and my family. It's unusual where those two things are misaligned.

Overlaid on top of that is how much integrity I believe the leadership has as a veto.

For example, I would never vote for Trump even if I 100% agreed with his party's platform simply because of his total lack of personal ethics, total lack of honesty, and the (to me at least) clear racism and misogyny.

Or from a Canadian lens, even though I often vote conservative, I would never vote for a conservative party led by someone like Stockwell Day. He actually believed that there is scientific proof the Earth is only 6000 years old, is openly homophobic and sought to intervene on gay marriage rights even though it goes against our Charter of Human Rights and freedoms and the public's will, and is openly racist and conspiratorial - pushing a "Asian invasion" anti-immigration theory. So even though I may have supported most of that party's fiscal platform, I could not vote for it with him leading it and feel a sense of integrity about the decision because I find those things to be abhorrent and irrational.

https://www.isidewith.com/ has a questionnaire that matches you up to the candidates that agree with your beliefs the most. Trump and the 3 top Democrats are solidly in my bottom 4 so I'll be "wasting" my vote on an independent most likely when the election finally gets here.

Re: How do you decide who you vote for?

I don't know when the USA actually had a moral or ethical president. Before mysogyny was even a word, most men were mysogynists. It was the normal attitude to have since women were 2nd class citizens. Heck, we only got the vote 100 years ago.

The first immoral president I knew about because his behavior was very public was through a woman named Paula Jones. Nobody seemed to care about her or the other women's claims against the President who attacked them.

Since none of them are moral or ethical, I narrow my considerations down to who will uphold our Constitution, protect us from foreign invasion, and protect our ability to make a living. Without those three things, we wouldn't have a Nation to call our own.

It depends on the election as well.

This year, my decision is already made, even if I don't know for whom I am voting.

Re: How do you decide who you vote for?

That is a very good question, and especially true for me in the 2020 election. The candidate who is best for me, I think is worse for the long term future of the country.

It is something I struggle with. There is an argument that everyone voting their own self-interest is the best solution - but its not true. If 51% vote to take everythign from the 49%, then repeat, that is not the best overall solution.

So I will probably vote for the candidate who I think is best for the country.

Re: How do you decide who you vote for?

I base my decision on what I feel is best for the majority of people. What is good for me personally does come into play, but it is far behind what I believe is best overall.

Cool Re: How do you decide who you vote for?

I vote for people who have a track record of helping deserving people first in some other capacity, much rather than one of self-service, or to their peers, associates, or political party!

Then I look at their core human qualities of character, empathy, and demeanor!

See above.

Hopefully they will be eaten shortly after me.
