I love doing things the ol Fashioned way.
Except for line/hang dry, I'm terrified of spiders or bugs in my undergarments!
But a meal made from scratch is x100 better than processed/factory food.

Humorous anecdote from childhood...

Mum was a spider killer extraordinaire. She would grab a tissue and tell us kids to just grab them and squeeze till you heard their bones crack.

Dad would find a jar with a lid, catch them and release them outside.

Imagine how confusing that was for a child?

IMO you're not weird at all for doing some things the old way.

We have a dishwasher, but wash a lot by hand, since there are 5 of us, and we cook from scratch.

We often bake our own bread. It gets eaten a lot faster than store bought! Love homemade Bohemian Dark Rye.

Prefer to line dry sheets, but use the dryer for everything else.

I'm looking forward to learning how to make my own soap. I love how homemade soap suds, but I don't want to pay $6 for a single bar of soap! My brother once told me I was crazy for wanting to learn how to make soap when I can just buy it from the store. Evidently he has not every used homemade soap to know the difference.

A good friend of mine makes her own soaps, too. She actually gave us, for Christmas, about a half dozen different bars she made. I cut chunks off and put it in one of those mesh scrubbing bags, to use in the shower. My husband and sons prefer the body wash, but my daughter and I use the bar soaps. The bars she gave us were bigger than the typical store bought bars, and likely would cost about $6 each if we were buying them. My daughter and I want to start making our own, but we need to get the stuff together, first. It's gonna be awhile. In the meantime, I got the melt and pour base to mix with scents and colors. It's a start! I'm just nervous about making it from scratch with two young kids around. Eventually, though, we will.

You can use the 2x4 without adding nails to it.

That explains why UPS hasn't delivered anything here. Just for your information I'm down to wearing my daughter's socks. Please, I don't want to get more desperate. 😡

I'm glad I'm not the only one that's considered spiders (despite the thread about camping). There was a clothes line when we moved in. I used it a few times then encountered something called 'nature'.

My children and I have done that type of "soapmaking" for years, but when we heard what others are doing with lye, water and oil, we were embarrassed that all we had been doing was melting, coloring and adding scent. Can't wait to do the whole thing from scratch!

What kinds do you want to make, Maricha? I want to make goat's milk and almond oil (mixed with olive oil) for starters.)

I haven't really settled on any in particular. Goat's milk, for sure. Maybe oatmeal. A few different ones to try out, to see what works best for our skin.

Re: I hand wash dishes & line/hang dry clothes, anyone else?

We hand wash our dishes one person does it one night and another the next and so on. Most of the places we've rented together or owned have never had a dishwasher. That said one of the places we lived in, did have a dishwasher and we never used it at all through 2 years of living there.

On the other hand we have used driers in two places we have been resident, that said a lot of our clothes would shrink in a drier so even then we didn't use a drier that often. Again when it comes to hanging the clothes out my wife and I either take turns, do it together or get the kids to do it.

As to cooking we mostly always cook our food from scratch (and happily use the most expensive non-stick cookware for our frypan and wok) or on occasion eat out. When at home we also always eat all of our meals at the dining table, in the dining room sans TV as we have always done.

Re: I hand wash dishes & line/hang dry clothes, anyone else?

Sometimes I hand wash, sometimes I use the dishwasher. If I'm really cold the warm water helps to warm me up.

I wish we could dry things outside but with all of the allergies we have, and six months of horrible weather we don't do that at all.

Never let the sadness of your past and the fear of your future ruin the happiness of your present.
